  2. I can't say that I had a bike I didn't like. Africa twin was a great teacher VFR800, well is a VFR, had 2 of them Pan european is a great tourer with a spetacular 250 miles range Shadow VT700c is a cracking cruiser fun to ride. So I shouldn't really reply to the thread
  3. Yesterday went for fuel.. Sainsbury's Kirkcaldy, then got the wrong turn and end up in Burntisland. Decided to go back. Kirkcaldy seafront, Leven and from there St. Andrews. Because was getting late decided to have a bite. Now.... St. Andrews is full of young uni students that spend their student loans in food and drinks. Can anyone, ANYONE, explain why there are restaurants in this country that close at 22:30 but only serve cooked food until 7? From 7pm you can have a pie... I'm diverting... From St. Andrews got a wee detour to Guardbridge, then Cupar, glenrothes and then home. 50 miles trip, Means that got home with around 1/2 tank

    Scotland 2021

    One thing you have to play close attention in Scotland is at some times of the year sheep go mental. This because they eat the magic mushrooms that grow in the wild and after nobody can predict what the silly buggers will do. Not rare to see one being high as a kite jumping to the road in front of a bike.
  5. I would argue that is an added gadget and not a mod. Similar to an USB charging port. An insurance company won't discard responsibilities because you have a charger. Even if they would argument with the use of a phone whilst riding, which is illegal for phone calls or texting, makes the installation of a USB charger illegal. This argument becomes redundant when the phone is used as navigation device.
  6. Isn't normal all 3 bulbs blowing at same time so I would put that at the bottom of the list. The checks with multimeter are for continuity and existence of 12V. For continuity you will need to unplug the battery or you risk burning the meter. Personally, I would start with 12V checks. Starting with the switch. When it is in off position where do you have 12V, then check it again by turning on the side that is working and see where you have 12V. turn on the other side and check again, it should read the same as opposite side. with faulty side on check 12V to the bulbs (both wires just to make sure the bulb is working) without the need to disconnect the battery you can check continuity to ground (-12V) is in good condition but you NEED to know what wires you're testing. If you're not comfortable in this disconnect the +12V on the battery. You will have to chase the cables for dodgy connections, like "almost good" connectors, a wire that seems ok but actually isn't. I would tend to think that if it is working one side only maybe the handlebar switch is not working properly as this is the part that gets the most of the action.
  7. After several failed attempts to refurbish the speedo and revmeter casings on my shadow, which started with a supposed chrome spray that ended up becoming grey after applying the clear coat. A very scrubby chrome film, mostly because as much the film is pliable when heated I couldn't get rid of the creases. Too embarrassing for photos Few weeks ago I found how chrome plating is made on plastic materials so decided to give it a go. Instead of chrome (which is a more complicated technique) I'll be experimenting with nickel plating. I know nickel will be darker than chrome but it can be as shiny. The important bit, as in any coating, is to make sure preparation is done correctly and to high standard. The process implies graphite conductive paint to cover the surfaces to be treated. Then a default free surface polish. After this will be copper plating. Some more polishing Then the final nickel plating which all going well won't need further polish. Probably will be creating a thread for this when I have all the stuff ready.
  8. Glad you have it sorted That's the main reason why most bikers do their own service instead of trusting people that claim being busy to justify their mistakes.
  9. PTFE wires are the only ones I found that are chemical resistant. Adding to this I'll be using PTFE heat shrink tubbing to improve insulation and minimal naked wire exposed to fuel. The device won't be measuring capacitance between the wires, only one will have a very small current (in order of 5mA - 0.005A) that is far from capable of creating a fire. The sensor works on resistance the same way as the current thermistor that is fitted to the fuel light. This means I'm not adding any risk. Because voltage at the sensor is less than 3V (max value) there is no risk of fire/explosion so ATEX rules don't apply. This opposite to the 12V that a normal fuel sensor have makes it safer than standard OEM fitted one. The sensor will be connected to the "brain" and subject to less than 3V as above and the other end will be grounded minimising the risk even further.

  12. Adding to what @fullscreenaging is saying you have to keep in mind that each brand have different criteria for the viscosity reference so what is W10 on Motul could be a W5 on Castrol (as example, I have no idea of the correct correspondence)
  13. With a stiffer spring you would have a lower grade oil possibly from W15 to W5 to compensate the harder springs. If they change the springs and same oil you will have that result. Would it be the case that you will have to get used to the new setup?

  16. Actually they are for exhausts on off-roaders when they are washed so water doesn't go in. A waste of money if you ask me.

  21. After creating ventilation on my diy phone holder This weekend I'll be fitting this beauty onto the Shadow. Together with the relay so it will power down when ignition is off. Comes with voltmeter, temp and 2 USB ports. Not bad for under £10

  25. I'll be running 4 wires inside the tank to connect the sensors. Although, as you say @fredc petrol is non-conductive I don't want to risk the cables moving around and not only change the position in the tank sending false information but also connect to the tank wall and create a short-circuit. So far I found out that a good contender is PTFE insulated wires and having the soldered connections covered with heat shrink PTFE tube. To hold the wires and sensors in place I'm thinking of some stainless steel cable like this. https://www.diy.com/departments/diall-stainless-steel-cable-l-10m-dia-3-5mm/1521256_BQ.prd The biggest problem I'll have is to fix the cable at the top next to the cap. The bottom will be going all the way down to the secondary tank so holding it there won't be an issue as it will be passing through the short connecting hose. My plan is to have the lower sensor on the upper side of the secondary tank, the 2nd sensor just above the bottom of the main tank, 3rd sensor halfway the main tank and sensor 4 close to the top (around 2in from top).
