  1. Don't scratch it !!!
  2. I suspect those silver bits will plug into or bolt onto the subframe, possibly the ends of the top tubes. You will need to remove the plastics from the tail unit and post some more pix
  3. You're gonna have to remove the tail unit plastics and find the holes where it fits?
  4. Still can't see it ?

    Tools

Halfords tools are good value, lidl and aldi are very cheap. Buy a good 3/8 socket set, combi and cranked ring spanners, Allen keys, screwdrivers, torque wrench, pliers, mole grips, brushes, a hammer, drill and a workmate.
  7. Patch weld it, then wrap it?
  8. Some twins have 2 plugs per cylinder Ian . Better burn allegedly. they tried it on some 8 valve z1000s as well???
  9. I live in hope mate. Would be nice to leave the carbs in place , as they are b'stard to get off and on. I'll try starting it first and see what happens. PMA might work
  10. Well no rust found in cylinders yet anyway! Next job is check sump for bits of metal etc. Fit oil filter, change oil and put electrics back in place to hopefully start it.. I suspect I,ll have to take carbs apart first though!!!

    paraffin oil

Kerosene , also used in most jet engines!!!. Paraffin is almost exactly the same stuff. great for degreasing chains and keeping warm with.
  12. Well cylinders been soaked in WD40 for 3 days, so took ignition /alternator cover off today and very slowly turned crankshaft. No scraping grinding noises and nice n free moving. No wiring loom , so attached car battery to starter and spun it over. sounds good without plugs in. Next job is replace battery box with reg/rec, starter solenoid and coils attached and try to start the beast!!! Some pix; Engine with all 4 plugs removed. http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/VN750/IMAG0387.jpg ignition/alternator cover off to access 17mm crankshaft nut. http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/VN750/IMAG0388.jpg Spinning motor with plugs out and car batter direct to starter motor. http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/VN750/IMAG0389.jpg Short vid. Forgot I still aint got wiring loom etc.Double click on piccy. http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/VN750/th_VIDEO0062.jpg
  13. What do you expect to happen in 500 miles FFS!!! Oil is the biggest moving part in the engine, you change it once or twice a year. Buy the best that you can afford. If it specifies semi, use semi not fully synth. Use bike oil, get ripped off, but have peace of mind
  14. Thanks Bob. gonna concentrate on engine starting first , then drive shaft, then forks n brakes. Cosmetics may have to wait a while yet.
  15. Well went to pick up the VN yesterday. I must say I was a bit disappointed when I saw it. The front discs are knackered, the tank has a lot of filler on it and there seemed to be a lot of bits missing. Most of them, but not all, were in two plastic boxes! Anyway a deal is a deal , so I strapped it onto my trailer and got home about 1700. Did some work on it today. Eventually found a 18mm socket to remove the plugs, all 4 of them, squirted some WD40 in the combustion chambers and put the plugs back in. The headers had nothing holding them onto the heads and I thought I would need new ones, but today I found the split collars and rusty domed nuts to hold them in. Limitting myself to just doing work to start the engine, so I tried to refit the battery box that carries the solenoid, reg/rec, and coils, but it won't go under the seat until I remove the rear wheel. will de-rust and paint it tomorrow and refit it on Tuesday. Some pics; http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/VN750/IMAG0381-1.jpg http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/VN750/IMAG0379-1.jpg http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/VN750/IMAG0380-1.jpg http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/VN750/IMAG0382-1.jpg
  16. Nothing sounds like a CBX on song. A mate used to drag race a turbo one. Rapid blipping of the throttle at 8000RPM, fast feed the clutch and that banshee whine as it screamed down the 1/4 mile. Awesome !!!
  17. Yes you should tell them, of any mods come to that. They will use any means to wriggle out of a payout.
  18. Will do mate. You need to make time to enjoy yerself. I hope to have all the time in the world come July. Encouragement from you guys n gals will help the project along.
  19. Thanks everbody for the encouragement. We pick the bike up on Saturday and I start fettling on Monday. Gonna spray some WD or 3in1 down the plugholes and turn it over by hand a few times. Gonna drain the oil and possibly drop the sumplate to make sure there's no big metallic lumps where they shouldn't be. It was last run in 2008 , so I don't wanna start doing the cosmetics until I know the drivegear is OK.
  20. Vacuum pipes should only be connected to a vacuum! So that's the connection at one of the cylinder head inlet stubs, the fuel tap or the carbs. A vacuum pipe should never be open ended!!!
  21. Should make it Bob, but probs meeting a mate in Basildon and eventually riding to Sarfend. Where is a good meeting point?
  22. Wish I had the time for radical mate. Maybe if I do retire in July? Just gonna strip it, Powdercoat and paint everything black. Checkout engine, carbs, forks and drive mechanism. Make new "silencers" for it . Make feet forward controls and then try some long rides on it to see how my knees cope. In the distant future it may get triked.!!!
  23. Always thought that you are a genius Bob
  24. May be a matter of having to Bob. My knees are getting worse , not better. Gotta try feet forward riding before I can't ride at all. Still keepin the Blade until then though!
