Altering the mileage on a vehicle is not illegal, but selling it on without telling the subsequent buyer is fraud. Prospective buyers of a second-hand car, van or bike can check the vehicle's MOT history via a government website.

Fraud then, but of the stupid kind as it's easy to spot with a few checks

been crashed/stolen had its original clocks smashed/stolen and a new set of clocks fitted before a fresh MOT.

The dealer must be really stupid to think its only done 200miles, or they are trying to rip people off.

Or got caught

Just shows the power of checking MOT history. Honestly, I only found out about that government website last year, and it was a dealer who told me about it when I was asking about the millage on my current bike.

And it's a free check :)

TANGENT ALERT

when I bought my bike it had only done 15k.(15 year old bike) The guy I bought it from had printed out the MOT history as he only had the bike for about 6 months and hadn't believed the mileage when he bought it
