Whostheduke Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 Hi guys, My battery died on my SDGT this weekend (it's been struggling to start since it started to get cold). Just installed a new one and it's still not starting. Here's a vid - any ideas? https://youtu.be/2ZiqvkVcL1U Cheers, Alex. Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 Have you charged the new battery? Just because it's new doesn't mean it's fully charged. Quote
Stu Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 Hi Alex welcome to the forum Have you got a multimeter? I would check the voltage across the new battery it might need a good charge if its been stored a while Failing that I would go for a bad connection as the clocks shut down when you hit the starter it shows either a lack of power or a high draw of power Quote
Tango Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 What battery did you get and what rating is recommended for your bike? Looks like the voltage is collapsing under load, so it either needs charging or is not rated high enough for your bike. I used to use Motobatt batteries as they have a good cold start current rating. Whostheduke Posted December 8, 2020 Author Posted December 8, 2020 Cheers guys - I haven't charged it so will buy a charger and do that first. Quote

The CCA on the new battery should be a big improvement over the old one, so it should be good. Also double check that the leads are good and clean and really tight on the battery terminals. 1 Quote
JRH Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 @Whostheduke have you read this before you get a charger? Quote

Mississippi Bullfrog Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 A few years back my cousin developed an electronic gizmo to do with monitoring commercial freezers but sold virtually none. He was advised to change the name of the company to a Japanese sounding name, after which he made a fortune. The stuff was still made in a unit in Glasgow. Quote

Low battery voltage usually shows as slow crank or no crank and a clicking starter relay. Quote
Whostheduke Posted December 9, 2020 Author Posted December 9, 2020 This is what level it was at when I plugged the charger in. Is that good?? Quote

Mississippi Bullfrog Posted December 9, 2020 Posted December 9, 2020 That reading suggests the battery was discharged and the charger is raising the voltage at a moderate current in order to deliver the bulk charge. I use CTEK chargers which have more diagnostic information on the charging process. 1 Quote
