Afternoon gents,

Question for the hands on lads, been having an issue with my fazer 600 1999 lately, really sluggish then kicks in then sluggish again, also leading to bad start unless choke is open. Got a new coil pack and leads, are these fairly simple to install? Or is there loads of bits to be removed first?

Cheers

Take the tank off, then you should be able to see the coil packs.

Best to remove the tank while fuel level is low, gets  a bit heavy when full. On some bikes you need to lift the rear of the tankup to disconnect the fuel pipe, Vacuum pipe (if fitted), fuel gauge wiring ( if fitted). Sometimes you can get at hem with the tank in place.

Coil packs should be simple to replace - 2 bolts, HT lead /plug cap, and the low voltage wiring.

Often worth taking photos before you remove anything so you can see where parts have to go back.

Hi mate, thanks for the reply, helped alot. Managed to swap them today without taking the tank off. Unfortunately it hasn't solved the issue, still a huge delay in the pick up, really sluggish, could it just be a spark plug issue?

Has it got inline fuel filter?

How fresh is fuel in tank?

Has it been laid up?

Have you tried a one shot fuel additive? Some hate them others consider them with a try. I do if bike has been laid up or has dodgy fuel.

An issue like this I'd change the plugs first as a matter of course. They don't last for ever and sometimes being laid up doesn't do them much good.

At least you'll eliminate the plugs as a possible cause.

As bender says if its been laid up over the winter I would suspect the carbs

Thanks guys, yeah its been laid up over winter, out side as well under a oxford cover. Carbs were refurbished around October time so I'm really hoping it ain't that. No it doesn't have a in-line fuel filter that I'm aware of and the fuel has been in there a couple of month. It was running fine on a ride out a few week back and after around 40 miles it just seemed to happen all of a sudden, power just dropped, pulled over then it struggled to start, would only start with choke open half way.

Cheers guys

The carbs will just be a bit gummed up and sticky thats all

The floats might be stuck stopping the fuel flow so try tapping the float bowl with a screwdriver

Does it run fine with the choke on?

Try running it on Prime position if it has one . Might be the vacuum hose .

Stu,

Il get it give that a go this afternoon and see if a quick tap on the float bowl sorts it. From what I can remember it was still intermittently sluggish when the choke was on. As it was ticking over yesterday it sounded like there was a dead spot, if that makes sense

I'm not sure it has one mate, I will check later on this aft. Hoping to get it sorted soonish as the better weather is around the corner

Would you recommend changing the plugs to see if that helps?

Will not hurt to run some carb cleaner through.

I’ve used Red X in the past. Which ever you use check the label and use carb cleaner most is now for inject systems.

With any engine you are dealing with a number of variables. The reason I suggested replacing the plugs is that it takes one variable out of the equation.

And whilst plugs these days are reliable and last much better than previously they do degrade and I've found that bikes laid up can often benefit from a new set of plugs.

Thank you. I will try it also as its a relatively easy possible solution

No guarantee but at least you can rule that out. I always prefer to start with the simplest things and only when I know they are good move to more complicated items.

Other option with tapping bowls is undoing drain screw on each and check you get good clean fuel.

Needing coke to start says to me fuel starvation or bad fuel...  However changing spark plugs doesn't do any harm.

40 miles doesn't mean clean fuel could just of stirred up enough crud to make it worse.

If your going Redex I would recommend:

Yes it's outboard but they normally spend all winter unused outside getting gummed up...

Thats why I asked if it all runs on choke OK

This could indicate that the carbs are gummed up and not allowing enough fuel through but given time the fuel will start to flow

Guys, I have run some carb cleaner through the bike (liquid molly) and still having the same issue. Beat way I can describe it is like a hiccup on tick over and alot of stalling, huge delay on revs when throttle is turned. I am going to swap out all.4 spark plugs tomorrowto see if that helps. Is there any where to put a small video Hopefully highlighting the issue? Cheers

@Dean01982 you would have to upload it to youtube and post a link

Thanks stu.

Did a little bit of tinkering before, making sure I had leads in the right order. Noticed a huge difference by wiggling one of the leads, is that normal? Might just be me but I'm sure it sounded better with it unplugged.

It should most definitely not sound better with a lead unplugged. Check they are in the right order. But that wouldn't cause the intermittent power loss you describe.

A dud lead can cause intermittent power loss if that cylinder stops firing. So fit the new leads and coil packs with new plugs.
