I've passed my test but a question came up elsewhere and searched but couldn't find an answer.  If ABS kicks in on emergency stop on mod 1 is that a fail ?

How would they know? You the rider probably won’t notice either unless there’s a telltale on the instruments.

I got told it would be marked down as a "minor" error.

I`m not sure I get how they would know the ABS was cutting in and anyway as @Mississippi Bullfrog said it is a normal function of the braking system and if the road surface was less than ideal which lets face it they usually are then I think it is designed as a rider aid and safety device and therefore why penalise someone?

Cheers

Both my bikes have ABS... apparently, I've never had it activate. I guess the only way it could be classed as an error is if someone was riding like a hoon and then just grabbed a handful of brake.

But isn't that what you do in a MOD 1, my back end locked up at the very last 6 inches before I almost hit a cone. Nothing was said. ABS makes a very noticeable jerking motion at the wheels. Only tried it in a car though, wouldn't do it on a bike.

Does it? Ive had it engage once on my old BMW and felt it pulse through the brake lever. but that was a very old ABS system from 1993 or earlier. modern systems are far more sophisticated and apparently unnoticeable. You really shouldn't have the ABS engage during the emergency stop for the test, unless the test area is very wet. its an emergency stop. not a panic IM GOING TO DIE braking manoeuvre. or the other scenarios where the ABS might activate, normal braking and you encounter gravel etc. at a junction.

Considering the examiner tells you they require you to do an emergency stop you should be expecting it, so should not be grabbing a handful of brake lever or pulling clutch in until bike almost stalls, besides, if your in the correct gear for the speed you are travelling at (being in top/6th gear at 30mph won't help) engine breaking plays a big part in stopping safely

Not sure I know if the abs engaged in mine tbh

Me neither..  the bike doesn't tell me, with a telltale light and these latest systems are so sophisticated they might only be active for fractions of a second so on and then off again before you even registered a problem.  a problem that could have easily escalated into something horrific. or given you a bad fright.
