Spongefinger Posted May 31, 2022 Posted May 31, 2022 I've passed my test but a question came up elsewhere and searched but couldn't find an answer. If ABS kicks in on emergency stop on mod 1 is that a fail ? Quote
Gerontious Posted May 31, 2022 Posted May 31, 2022 How would they know? You the rider probably won’t notice either unless there’s a telltale on the instruments. 1 Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted May 31, 2022 Posted May 31, 2022 I wouldn't have thought so. It's a normal function of the bike under heavy braking. 1 Quote
runningman Posted May 31, 2022 Posted May 31, 2022 I got told it would be marked down as a "minor" error. 1 Quote

I`m not sure I get how they would know the ABS was cutting in and anyway as @Mississippi Bullfrog said it is a normal function of the braking system and if the road surface was less than ideal which lets face it they usually are then I think it is designed as a rider aid and safety device and therefore why penalise someone? Mississippi Bullfrog Posted May 31, 2022 Posted May 31, 2022 Both my bikes have ABS... apparently, I've never had it activate. I guess the only way it could be classed as an error is if someone was riding like a hoon and then just grabbed a handful of brake. 1 Quote

But isn't that what you do in a MOD 1, my back end locked up at the very last 6 inches before I almost hit a cone. Nothing was said. ABS makes a very noticeable jerking motion at the wheels. Only tried it in a car though, wouldn't do it on a bike. Edited June 8, 2022 by Lumor_uk Quote

Ive had it engage once on my old BMW and felt it pulse through the brake lever. but that was a very old ABS system from 1993 or earlier. modern systems are far more sophisticated and apparently unnoticeable. You really shouldn't have the ABS engage during the emergency stop for the test, unless the test area is very wet. its an emergency stop. not a panic IM GOING TO DIE braking manoeuvre. or the other scenarios where the ABS might activate, normal braking and you encounter gravel etc. at a junction. billy sugger Posted June 8, 2022 Posted June 8, 2022 Considering the examiner tells you they require you to do an emergency stop you should be expecting it, so should not be grabbing a handful of brake lever or pulling clutch in until bike almost stalls, besides, if your in the correct gear for the speed you are travelling at (being in top/6th gear at 30mph won't help) engine breaking plays a big part in stopping safely 1 Quote

Blackholesun Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 Not sure I know if the abs engaged in mine tbh Quote
