onesea Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 (edited) Looking at switching one of our matching cars…. 2.2 diesel x-trails. Simply because they are not, doing the miles. Recent MOT hers nearly failed it’s MOT because it’s smoky, it’s just no longer doing motorway miles. However her commute has gone from 30miles each way @40-70mph to 8 miles @30mph if your lucky. There is no point getting a good/ new car, our use is to get a small car put back seats down and use as 5 door van, for dogs outboard bike bits etc. It’s turning into a headache, take the Toyota Yaris Car Tax £30-160 pounds depending on model. Fuel consumption is as random, some are less efficient than our present big diesels others are reported as much as 50mpg (I always check on Fuelly for standard fuel useage estimate). Any advice what to look for to save hours of googling, you know how it goes - nice car nice fuel consumption OMG how much Tax? It all seems totally random. Edited September 4, 2022 by onesea Quote
Bender Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 Short mileage I would go petrol and take the hit on mpg, will save you headache on modern diesel unless your going so old you can pick up a pre dpf but I think I would still go petrol. Honda crv, they are not pretty and driven predominantly by old folk but loads to choose from and cheap and similar size to xtrail? Quote

Plan is to put the back seat down and make the car a small 2 seat van. We will still have big car for when there is more than 2 of us. Quote

Mississippi Bullfrog Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 We had a couple of Yaris. They were brilliant. We had MK1 1 litre engines which were great. The MK2 onwards the 1.3 petrol is good. The smaller engine is underpowered. When the last one got eaten by tinworm we bought a Skoda Citigo. 1.0 three cylinder engine which I'm not that excited about but it goes ok and on a run gives over 60mpg. Round town it's still over 50mpg. It's a small car so you might to look at something a bit bigger. Our daughter has a Fabia and loves it. The turbo model goes well and it cheap on fuel. Quote
onesea Posted September 4, 2022 Author Posted September 4, 2022 Thinking Yaris, C1 & 107 which are all the same. Suzuki Alto or Nissan Pixo which again are badge engineering. The back will just be used as a van. Strangely the other one that caught it eye was a Volvo C30 looks surprisingly efficient however a tad expensive to cart did and outboards around.. Quote

Volvos as our inlaws discovered are plagued with electrical corrosion on the main fuse assy, it's only 600 odd quid to get sorted if you have a good independent garage that knows what they are doing. Bianco2564 Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 My Mrs has a 5dr 2005 BMW120d, pre dpf and the reliable M47 engine. Can't fault it for all round use, back seats fold flat for tip run duties, 5 seater for the grandkid runs, and a pokey 2 litre engine for easy long distance cruising. Round town does 40mpg and up to 50 on a run. Had ours four years and had nothing major go wrong with it in 20k miles. They did an E87 1 series in petrol if you didnt want diesel but i think they are a bit unreliable. Other option I was looking at before buying it was an Audi A3. Quote

It is the Aygo which shares the same platform and running gear as the C1 and 107. The Yaris is bigger. 1 Quote
Old-codger Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 Have a look at the Skoda mk2 with the 1.2 three cylinder petrol engine, average 45/50 around town chain driven cams and 135 quid to tax. Pick up a nice estate and small car with lots of space. Its all VW/Audi running gear. Quote
skyrider Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 Ford courier van they are like a tardis you can get two cb500's in the back of one Quote
Bender Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 With a van you usually kiss your car ncd goodbye and start again. Quote
