JCZ Posted June 30, 2023 Posted June 30, 2023 Hello everyone. I'm not a biker by any stretch of the imagination - sorry to disappoint you. My brother, on the other hand, has just bought his first bike in the UK (against all advice from just about every family member, and every friend he has). Instead of argueing with the stubborn b@st@rd any longer, I've decided to get on board with the idea. In fact, I've decided to buy him a helmet. I don't just want any cheap sh1t helmet, I need a decent one. Bluetooth connectivity and rear facing camera not 100% necessary, but definitely a bonus. Please, if you have any suggestions or recommendations, I would be eternally grateful. Thanks again, all the best. Quote
Fiddlesticks Posted June 30, 2023 Posted June 30, 2023 (edited) The camera and bluetooth will be separate items. Helmets are one of those things you've got to try on. I must have tried half a dozen before I found one that fit just right. If the shop staff are experienced, they'll advise. My local guy won't sell you a helmet if he's not happy with how it fits you. Very kind gesture on your part Edited June 30, 2023 by Fiddlesticks 1 Quote
fullscreenaging Posted July 1, 2023 Posted July 1, 2023 If you live near a Sportsbikeshop store then take him along and speak to one of their staff. They are very experienced and will be able to help. There are so many variables when it comes to helmets. Head shape will determine which brand will be the best fit. The biggest bug bear for bikers is the wind noise. The cause of this can even come down to the bike you ride. Your brother needs to invest in ear plugs when riding his bike. Again there is a massive selection of different ear plugs trial and error will determine which ones suit him. I have settled on the Loop ear plugs with the Loop Mute insert. I have been through tonnes of others over the years. You’re a good brother. Maybe your brother will get you into bikes ….. 1 1 Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted July 1, 2023 Posted July 1, 2023 I agree with the above comments. The shape of your head determines which helmets fits best. You don't need to spend a fortune to get high safety specification, my cheap Duke 2 actually outperforms my expensive Schuberth on safety ratings. But the Schuberth is more comfortable and quieter. Do not buy online. Helmets need to be fitted by someone who knows what they are doing. An experienced biker can buy online and return an unsuitable helmet, but your brother won't have the experience to do that. If you live near a branch of Sportsbikeshop they are excellent. I buy helmets from J&S as there is branch just round the corner. They are also good, their prices tend to be higher but they offer a price match so you can get them to match Sportsbikeshop's prices. 1 Quote

Good on him, what people fail to mention about motorcycling is that it’s only dangerous compared to cars. Certainly less dangerous than sitting at home feeling miserable. There are plenty more dangerous activities out there. As for lids, he needs to try some on. They don’t need to be the most expensive. They don’t need Bluetooth connection, or rear view cameras all a distraction to start with. I never even notice the weight saving, I had a carbon one once didn’t notice the difference when I got my next. I would suggest internal sun visor. A decent rating on here dose no harm: https://sharp.dft.gov.uk/ Others will shout you must buy the best, as a first lid I would go £100-200 that fits well. That’s probably the biggest safety factor, a good fit. IMHO there is little point buying a good first lid, it’s the one he or his kids will drop and scratch until he learns how to look after it. 1 Quote
bonio Posted July 1, 2023 Posted July 1, 2023 Well done for coming alongside him The one thing about a lid is that it must fit properly (which is more tight than you'd expect). Since different people have different shaped heads, the only way to get this right is to take him to decent shop and have someone there find him one to fit. No need to spend a fortune - all the lids they'll have in stock will be safety marked and fine to wear on the road, and more pounds don't mean more safety. The main benefits of a more expensive helmet are more comfort and better ventilation. Decent ventilation is useful, especially for riding in winter, as it helps stop the visor misting up. As onesea says, an internal sun visor is another useful feature - really helps visibility when riding into a low sun. But you should be able to get all this at around £100. Go for a full face helmet, not open face. Quote
bud Posted July 1, 2023 Posted July 1, 2023 If you get the helmet with the blue tooth built in. You don't pay the vat on the communication device. As it's all classed as safety equipment. Quote
Bungleaio Posted July 2, 2023 Posted July 2, 2023 Don’t forget to buy yourself a helmet too and go though the training as well. You might enjoy it more then you think 2 Quote
