AstronautNinja Posted August 10, 2024 Posted August 10, 2024 Sometimes I just enjoy a browse round said supermarket, very rarely buy anything but a leisurely skim through the Christmas cards in April often yields a bargain. 1 Quote

Oh how i know that feeling. They rebuilt our local shell garage it now has more pumps and parking it takes longer to fill up, because they added a Waitrose. Here it is old people, appearing to do there weeks shopping whilst getting there weeks petrol, all £10 of it. Trying to remember how to put the card in the slot (no you don't swipe the magnetic strip any longer) then thier pin or paying cash (where do they get the cash the banks have closed down?). Only good thing is it keeps the attendants busy, last time in I put 10 lts of diesel in the car and 40 in to cans (for the boat green diesel is near enough the same prices as red in marinas and better quality*) plus another 10lts in petrol. Now there is another rant, having sailed about 150 miles I figure I should top up my diesel and petrol. I carry my 2 empty cans to the pump it's only 10 lts. No you have to bring the boat. So I have to start the engine go out of the Marina to change fender mooring ropes round and come back in again to fill these to cans? Then reverse the process to go back to my berth. Yes, they did offer to help, but could not come onboard and move lines and fenders or steer I had to do that. - I left without topping up. Sub rant over, for now. onesea Posted August 11, 2024 Posted August 11, 2024 I might as well add another yachty rant. Having spent the "summer" on the boat down the west country it's time to head home. As I go east things are changing, yesterday when I arrived in port. I chatted with my neighbour's they asked where I had been? Normal boat chat, I said I had been on board for over 2 months there immediate response was "What on that?" Then followed by a comment we like dogs but people with dogs should be made to moor in a different area. The harbour master thought my dog was lovely, her barking let them know they had a boat going to fast! 3 1 Quote

Tinkicker Posted August 16, 2024 Posted August 16, 2024 Had a new roof put on the bike shed, so everything had to be put in my other sheds and the VFR stayed outside under a tarp for the day. Bike shed has one of those 5 tier shelf racks, a 4 tier smaller rack and two long shelves, all crammed solid and stuff stacked on the floor too. Came to put stuff back in and started throwing all the paint tins with 20% paint left in them, and the 25 litre drums half filled with distilled water from my electroplating experiment when I restored the VFR. Two trips to the tip later, I had disposed of all the "essential" crap that I had hoarded over the last 10 years or so. I no longer need the 4 tier rack, and the fitted shelves are bare... Everything to be kept fitted very comfortably on the 5 tier shelving. I can move easily around the bike again.. Why the feck do we do this? Hoard stuff that "might come in" one day? I have 4 other sheds, similarly filled to the rafters with cobweb riddled crap. I see further visits to the tip in my future and the staff asking if I am just a homeowner, or should I be using a trade account? Of course, next week I will be in dire need of something that I just junked.. Guaranteed. 6 2 Quote

Fozzie Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 (edited) Bit of a resigned ramble about a few things today. First is work, going into most weeks with a list of what I want to do, get to the end and I still have the same list as I'm pulled left and right to deal with things. So stuff is piling up quickly, and I've got medical leave coming up as I need an operation to fix a breathing issue, which will leave me in bed for a week and out of action for 2. My little 125 project hit a dead end. The engine can't be rebuilt, or better put, wasn't designed to be. In a nutshell, the crank was damaged rebuilding it, and not the fault of the engine builder. The crank cases are meant to go back together by hand, but you need a 10 ton press to get the bearing to sit. I spent days experimenting and trying to work out why it wouldn't go back together, and in the end it proved to be the Honda supplied bearings, don't fit the case properly. Why? I can't figure out. But I've done a lot of work on this engine to find it's a dud basically, which has been infuriating. This next one is something I'm just watching with a slightly baffled pair of eyes. I've had some screenshots sent through, and in the last 6 months my ex has been bashing me, mostly in comment sections on Instagram. I don't know if it's recent, or if this has been steadily going on since we split (officially nearly 6 years ago, unofficially, 8 years). The people who saw it only caught it by chance, so no way to know, but having to keep an eye on that now in case it's anything more insidious. My little sister in Australia is going through a lot. Her ex boyfriend really did her wrong, and while it was to his credit that he admitted this, it left my sisters self-esteem in an absolute wreck. And she's having a wobble. I've sent stuff over to her by post to cheer her up, but my family are wanting her home in the UK. And the politics of it are aggravating me, I want to support my sister, not convince her to come home even if some think that's right for her. To top it off, I've got to buy a house before the market picks up again. No one is selling because the market won't pick up. And I'm really annoyed at the point of view some people just a few years older than me have. They bought a house in 2020 for 250k, now it's worth 450k. They seem to think it was the new laminate they put down, or the lick of paint they gave it, which is why it grew £200k in 3 years (stagnant for the past 1). Girlfriend was kicking me at a BBQ every time I interjected with one girl "how does £5000 of upgrades result in a return of 40 times the investment?". It's all weighing up a bit at the moment. As someone who also lived abroad I can relate to the family wanting her to move back, I had similar. Imo sticking it out will hopefully allow her to grow, adapt and get stronger. Moving home, for me anyway was a mistake. I am actually trying to get my missus on board to move to Poland with me and our son. Do your best to support her and encourage staying where she is. Obviously my opinion is very loosely applied to her situation with me not knowing all the details but moving home to the security of family is the easy way out of what could turn out to be a worthy battle if she stays 2 Quote

Obviously my opinion is very loosely applied to her situation with me not knowing all the details but moving home to the security of family is the easy way out of what could turn out to be a worthy battle if she stays I'm of the view she needs to do 2 years, and when she's offered to go for citizenship, decide then. It takes 2 years to go through the process just to earn your right to stay there and apply for citizenship from what I understand, so I think she needs to decide one way or the other if she's coming back, or staying there. I suspect she will choose to come back, but leaving early will always leave that question of "what if?". You hear of many people who go out there and stay out there, but I've noticed most of them go with a spouse/long term partner or quickly find someone out there, and then go on to have kids, so have reason not to come back. She's coming home for Christmas, so will get a better idea of what's up then. I did see her in Bali back in June, where it seemed she was wanting to come home, but that was largely as her boyfriend chose to end things while she was out there on holiday (there's no right time but yeesh that was rough). It's my birthday this week, and a 3 day weekend. My girlfriends family is up and meeting my family at a BBQ, so that will take my mind of stuff for a while. Fingers crossed my new engine for the CBR shows up before hand and gets that project back on track. 2 Quote

Nick the wanderer Posted August 31, 2024 Posted August 31, 2024 That is truly awful service, they should have gone through it all with you and shown you these things. Are you suing them or have some non disclosure deal going? Why aren't you naming and shaming? Quote

You can probably guarantee that the fellow who told you it was good will never ever make that mistake again. 1 Quote
Nick the wanderer Posted August 31, 2024 Posted August 31, 2024 Yes it is something you should have been aware of, but it wasn't. You relied on a salesman who told you it was going to be done and it wasn't. That's some over sight! Small business or not they need to be held accountable so it doesn't happen again. The salesman may never make that mistake again, or he may have laughed as you left saying 'got away with that', you don't know. Call me a cynic, that's my view anyway, you are clearly a more forgiving person than me. Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted August 31, 2024 Posted August 31, 2024 I have always thought that people who put a No Turning sign on their driveway are a bit pedantic. But today I found out why they do it. We had a new gate installed last week. Today a truck decided to use our drive to turn round and reversed into the new gate breaking it. Then buggered off without owning up to it. And just to prove the conspiracy theorists right our cctv covering the driveway cut out due to a power cut. 5 Quote
