S-Westerly Posted July 25, 2024 Posted July 25, 2024 Apparently pink is the most visually obvious colour. Why I've no idea and I for one won't be riding in pink. Quote

However, one retailer said he was told that pink helmets actually stand out more than white because they are unusual. I have seen horse riders in pink “Polite” hi vis and they certainly do stand out better than the yellow ones. I would hazard a guess that would be similar with crash helmets. Capt Sisko Posted July 28, 2024 Posted July 28, 2024 (edited) White helmets are also cooler in really sunny weather (not that we've had a lot of that recently have we). At one end Gloss White reflects the sun, at the other Matt Black absorbs it. Unscientific of course and any helmet left out in the baking sunshine is going to get hot, but my experience says darks ones get hotter than light ones. Edited July 28, 2024 by Capt Sisko 1 Quote

RideWithStyles Posted July 28, 2024 Posted July 28, 2024 (edited) Correct also makes sense when you think about it. Edited July 28, 2024 by RideWithStyles Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Of course it's scientific. Black objects absorb heat more than white objects. Basic school physics. 1 Quote
AstronautNinja Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 Personally I attach a large rubber penis to my helmet (I call it Gary). No one dares pull out on me as I'm effectively a high speed, petrol powderd dildo that clearly means business. I then give them a friendly nod whilst passing to give them some scope to the mass of said dildo they just avoided. 1 7 1 Quote
Saul Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 I have a white and a silver lid, not noticed any difference in being noticed with either really. Yes I did get the white one cheaper than list price. I must admit to hating riding in traffic, most of the time I don't have to, but recently I have been taking my daughter to college while she is waiting for her 17th birthday and being on the road with her own bike. Bloody rush hour traffic in the local large town is horrific to me. Suppose I am spoilt living in rural Cornwall. 1 Quote

Capt Sisko Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 (edited) I used to ride a white BMW and wear a white helmet and plain Hi-Vis yellow jacket, honestly some days is was like Moses parting the waters. As for stopping on a motorway bridge or similar just to watch the traffic. Naughty I know, but it's amazing how good some drivers observation skills can suddenly get! I had a mate who bought an ex police white BMW K1100RT at auction. He had a white lid as well, the traffic used to react in just that way for him, never a problem filtering behind him. 2 Quote

Why I've no idea and I for one won't be riding in pink. When I commuted to the city a bike passed me filtering cannot remember colour of bike but it was feminine. Wearing pink and purple, subtle feminine, long ish hair over jacket down back. I followed they where doing it well and I was relatively new on bike. Got to traffic lights they were turning right, I pulled up along side hidden behind the full chin bar was a bushy beard. I never worked out if he did it as traffic was less aggressive to females? On to helmets, I was advised that having some pattern / markers on your helmet makes you more visible as when you turn your head it attracts the eye. A friend fitted retro tape to his helmet for a trip to Europe and that certainly helped of a night. Hi viz probably does help and pink might be good colour second to oh shit is that a police officer colouring. However ask any emergency service driver if people look and the answer is no. How can they not see a 4ton truck with lights and sirens glaring? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1d599793rro# As others say a human eye looks for what it wants or needs to see and most don’t think that way about bikers. Ride to be seen position to be seen, and change it to decrease chance of being behind an A frame, never arrive at a junction the same time as another vehicle when ever possible, position so you have an escape route or can minimise your impact in worse case. Watch for clues from drivers some don’t look, others don’t like bikes. I always watch cars on roundabouts if my head turns to look at them they often pullout. Don’t turn your head and they don’t know if you have seen them wanting to. Quote
wastedyears1981 Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 I've slapped bright LED H4's and super bright LED spots on my Tiger 800XC ....... bright enough to see me from the moon. My jacket is hi-vis too. Still wouldn't put it past someone to not see me. So think the colour of my lid is irrelevant Quote
