husoi Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 (edited) After long research and plenty thinking I decided that my best option to deal with rust on the pan is this: Rust stripping disk to remove it Cold zinc primer as treatment Then some black paint to match the existing. This where the original is black and out of sight. The fairings bolts are new and I will only use some anti sticky paste, I believe @Bender suggested it (apologies if someone else) The side and central stand is a different matter all together. Don't think I can nickel plate both because of the size. Still in study and open to suggestions Would zinc and black paint help? Edited April 9, 2024 by husoi 2 Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 As I think I've said elsewhere, I've used Bonda primer and Ronseal NoRust on that kind of rust with very good results. I'd go with paint in a tin rather than a rattle can as unless you're dismantling everything getting at the back of the tubing with a spray is difficult to ensure good coverage. Both are cellulose based so you'd need some thinners. 1 Quote

manxie49 Posted April 10, 2024 Posted April 10, 2024 Historically I've always used Fertan products and found them to be excellent. I've used their product range on everything from bikes to metal garden railings and I've never had any issues. They do a full range of products available here in the UK. Not cheap, but they do seem to work. Quote

That was pretty much how I found out about it, a mate used it on his boat trailer, that was a few years ago and the trailer is still going strong. You don't get much harsher an environment than the sea, it's a good advert for it. 1 Quote
husoi Posted April 10, 2024 Author Posted April 10, 2024 Progress so far Used rust converter on places I can't remove rust with the disk or steel brush. Applied the zinc primer to cleaned parts. Where metal is pitted I used chemical cleaning. The side stand was probably the worst part. Unfortunately acid doesn't really work on iron as much as in steel so lots of brushing, sanding and disk. Tomorrow will show the 3 bits with nickel plating The 2 springs for the stand and the axle bolt. Picture with the green liquid is for the plating 5 Quote
husoi Posted April 11, 2024 Author Posted April 11, 2024 First batch of plated bits The thread on the bolt needs some detailing. Happy with the rest. Hopefully rust free for a while 2 Quote
husoi Posted April 20, 2024 Author Posted April 20, 2024 Another update. A very shiny side stand And a very rusty central stand Honda love to make things complicated In order to remove the side stand I had to remove the entire exhaust system. This because the axle for the centre stand comes out straight to the pipe just before the silencer 5 Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted April 21, 2024 Posted April 21, 2024 Did you find that centre stand on the Titanic? 4 Quote
S-Westerly Posted April 21, 2024 Posted April 21, 2024 Looks like the result of magnet fishing in a canal. 2 Quote
husoi Posted April 21, 2024 Author Posted April 21, 2024 More like never done anything to it since 2015 1 Quote
husoi Posted April 22, 2024 Author Posted April 22, 2024 Found a blasting company that will do it for around £15 Not even going to think twice about it. The guy even said would paint it for me. Just not sure what paint he will be doing but I'll discuss it on Wednesday when I go there Some works aren't worth the trouble of trying to do manually when a machine can do it faster, better and cheaper than me spending 3 hours and have it half done 1 Quote

husoi Posted April 22, 2024 Author Posted April 22, 2024 Back to the main subject Just ordered the 2 springs for the stand. Now just need everything to arrive and get it fitted. Meanwhile will still.havr to clean the underside of the engine and whatever more I will find needing a clean. Apply more ACF50 and put the fairings back with the new bolts. That's a job for the weekend and evenings. Quote
