RideWithStyles Posted January 22 Posted January 22 (edited) What motorbike related fads did/do you like, dislike, want to return or never? I never got the idea of camo jackets and especially Camo pants Particularly the bright garish ones that seemed more common among the Suzuki owners (+france) when I was younger. strangely it’s been two years now on my Suzuki and I’ve seen this: and thought….yes, i should. Simon Davey Posted January 23 Posted January 23 (edited) Bring back Proper boots. I had a nasty crash on my ZX6 twenty five years ago and I was wearing boots that would now only be off-road boots. They were calf high, and had 5 or so hefty cam buckles, but they were styled for sport bike position, so there was plenty of angle for the ankles. They saved my legs for sure. What I have for winter isn't too bad, but my summer boots offer little protection. Edited January 23 by Simon Davey 3 Quote
Mawsley Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Personally, I like camo as it makes you harder to spot and be waved at. This picture, for example. You won't believe it, but there are a couple of motorbikes and riders in it - it's not just an empty shot of a load of film crews 1 5 Quote

I'd never guess the large green frogs with red eyes were motorbikes. 1 2 Quote
S-Westerly Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Dislikes - open faced so-called jet helmets. The only serious off I've ever had would have seen me dead if I'd been wearing one of those. 4 Quote

Of course, there's no price on keeping one's legs though..... 1 Quote

RideWithStyles Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 Second on stu’s post of sidi, the best money spent and saved a fortune of not having to replace them! still use the first pair i bought over 17 years ago. wife would go through a pair every year or so, eventually saw the light and got some too. 1 1 Quote
bonio Posted January 24 Posted January 24 My experience with Sidis is they come in fairly narrow. At least for me - my feet are like plates. Quote
Tinkicker Posted January 24 Posted January 24 (edited) When the owner of a Mitsubishi Shogun decided to park it on top of my CB900 and I on the 1st of June 1997, I was wearing AXO motocross boots, being an on and off road rider, the one pair did all. Broken fibia and comminuted fracture of the tibia in my left leg. The specialist bone sawer who screwed my leg back together said that had I not been wearing those sturdy boots, there was an excellent chance that he would not have been able to save the lower leg. As for camo pants on the bike. Wore them in the 1980s and still wear them today. I lost the very frayed denim cutoff over leather jacket and bar towels sewn to my jeans for extra "armour" look though once I reached 20. Still have the denim.... And it still smells very faintly of patchoulli oil. The missus has been wanting to throw it out for years. Axo RC2s saved my leg. Mine were all boack though. Edited January 25 by Tinkicker 3 Quote
Fiddlesticks Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Better than these mesh things I mistakenly bought last summer Sure, they have a little round disc sewn in to protect the ankle, but the soles are so flimsy that putting the centre stand down is impossible. Walking boots would be safer, I'm sure. 3 Quote

I've just bought some Frank Thomas summer boots, a bit better protection than those, but only just. £69.99 https://youtu.be/V78l0USmOwg Edited January 24 by Simon Davey 2 Quote
Tinkicker Posted January 24 Posted January 24 (edited) I wear tactical boots these days to go with my combat pants. They protect my ankles if the bike falls over and thats about it. I do not go fast enough, do enough miles, or take chances these days to feel the need to dress like robocop. I most definately do not ride in groups... I prefer the drill sergeant look... No need for lacing, get your laces nice and tight, then after that, just use the inner side zip to get them off and on. Pet hate historically, would be the dayglo leathered, matching helmet and colour co ordinated gloves, highway warrier, mid life crisis, sportsbike rider type. Typically riding a brand new fireblade and " avin it large" at his one sunny ride per week bike meet, 10 miles from his house door. My mates and I would turn up, on a motley collection of machines, black leather, long hair and patchoulli oil, to get the smug look of superiority from billy fireblade. Even worse were the "Wingers" complete with five bedroom holiday home with granny flat and conservatory contained within the silly paint matched, 8ft wide trailer on the back of their garish american two wheeled bordello. If I so much as said hello to those back in the day, they would call the police.. Edited January 24 by Tinkicker 5 1 Quote
Capt Sisko Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Worth a quick read as boot manufacturers can offer protection over & above the basic level of the CE standard. https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/articles/advice-and-guides/motorcycle-boot-ce-markings-explained 1 Quote

I’m sure she was joking about it…. I’ll hopefully get chance to try it out this weekend? so I will still need my wits about me . 2 Quote

billysugger Posted February 7 Posted February 7 When I was hit by an idiot that pulled out ,(without looking, he admitted afterwards ) my ankle was trapped between my bike and his wheel arch as I was thrown over his bonnet. The paramedic that attended wanted yo cut my boot off but I wouldn't let him, so undid the zip and pulled it off though admittedly it was rather painful. My boots had a steel bar in the base, armour in the ankle and calf area, reinforced toe area so feet were fairly well protected. When the boot was of the entire area that covered my ankle collapsed over yo one side, as the armour had been destroyed. I suffered major soft tissue damage to my right ankle/foot,which meant two weeks off work and instructions to keep any weight off it,and it's still not perfect today and my accident was in the late 90's. Doctors told me if not for my boots I would have lost my foot Quote

Essexboy Posted February 7 Posted February 7 I've a camo fetish too. I've had counselling but it's been futile 2 2 Quote
