  1. And suddenly this interesting thread isn't worth viewing. well done.
  2. I had the same decision to make earlier this year.. the choices are huge and quite bewildering. price differences too. In the end one aspect swung it for me and that was long term maintenance. A lot of exhaust cans have to be repacked, some more frequently than others . Some manufacturers say you must do this to keep the warranty going. Or, you can just stick it on and forget about it, which is what a lot of people do. I went for a Scorpion in the end because it was about mid-range in price. never needs repacking. And is made fairly local to me in Derbyshire. cans for you bike vary in price from £229 to £379 RRP oval or round. Carbon. Stainless or Titanium. https://tinyurl.com/ss499lj And are beautifully made. With some fairly significant savings going on right now.
  3. Nothing more satisfying than having your bike stolen and the act recorded for your viewing pleasure.
  4. Quick answer: They haven't. top speed mentioned on various websites for the Vision 110 is around 50mph. so i doubt any standard bike would manage 70. and would likely struggle to make even 60. So, no restrictions required. Its how they are as around town commuters. made for roads with 20 and 30mph speed limits and the occasional 40... with a little in reserve.
  5. Heres a shopping list of all those items essential for the international motorcycle traveller... of 120 years ago. plenty to choose from...
  6. maybe its both.
  7. Not sure what you mean about cutting.. the PDF of the fitting kit is simple enough and doesnt mention any cutting at all. if there were any modifications needed they would be made abundantly clear. Below. years 09-13
  8. When there is a lithium available from a known brand at a price you can justify, the idea of opting for a lead acid instead is as ridiculous as replacing the lithium battery in your smart phone with a Duracell alkali. And for very similar reasons.
  9. No https://www.esso.co.uk/fuels-faqs#collapse-fuels-faqs-faq-5 Crikey , no you're not making it up , my apologies . I still can't find out why these regions should be different from the rest of the UK but there it is . Weird . Because they're on the periphery. Probably.. Too far from the refinery that produces this particular grade of petrol. It's rather more odd that this is specific to Esso and not Mobil as well.
  10. Only problem i have with Ethanol is there is only 40% in most single malts.
  11. I owned a BMW for a long time and so as a consequence of that a bikes 'looks' are secondary to how it rides. My own personal opinion of this bikes aesthetics is that its very 'Bright'.. its not subtle. Its very distinctive compared to practically anything else in this sector of the market. And the Tracer is not in that same segment. Also.. all the other makers are seriously lacking in one very particular way. After riding this bike for a year including a weeklong trip to the eifel. Ive become a huge fan of the gear box/transmission. none of the other makers do anything like it and so are for the time being off my radar and indeed trading it in for anything else would be 'downgrading'. A big step backwards. I would be more likely to get a BMW.. if Im going to downgrade.. do it with style. No half measures.
  12. Yesterday marked one year since I got this bike. Over the past 12 months its had a single warranty claim for moisture that got between the inner and outer covers of the instrument panel. A known fault that Honda didn't argue with and fixed. Aside from that - no problems at all. And no regrets about buying it either. Changes Ive made: New tubeless wheels. Exhaust end can. Seat. Pillion seat luggage plate. Screen. Headlamp covers. Fork covers. Handlebar crossbar. Fork adjusters. And Tankside knee pads/stickers.

It flings when you use too much.
  14. Second was one of these: But... its the third bike thats the killer.. one I have always deeply regretted selling. (To fund a Hinckley 750) mad to lose this thing of beauty.
  15. So, this happened in the Republic of Ireland. I didn't know they did the poppy appeal there...thats actually news to me and im irish by birth. some recompense i guess for the appalling things they allowed to happen in WW2. Not to mention a great uncle of mine whose name is all that remains of him at Tyne cot and was afterwards almost deliberately forgotten.
  16. BMW are fairly notorious for never offering 0% finance deals. Unlike the japanese in particular who are competing against each other, BMW have never seen any point in joining in with that as they cant usually make bikes fast enough. Unless you are very lucky.. bikes are often built (or finished) on order. with at least a few weeks wait between your order and the bike arriving. The only possibility of a deal is if a dealership has excess stock they cannot shift.. or ex demo bikes they need to move on - fast. but even thats a rarity. As far as I can tell the new F900R is just an incremental update of the F850R Which itself was a small update of the F800R and that bike was great to begin with.. especially with an AC Schnitzer exhaust. I would weigh up carefully the differences between the 850 and 900 and ask if the price increase is in line with the updates.

  18. One of these. A Two Stroke Triple. Rode it for two years and then passed my test and bought one of these in 1982.
  19. ECE is the European standard that all helmets sold in the EU must meet. Its quite strict in that the helmets are constantly tested during a models life - random samples from every batch. DOT and SNELL are American standards. Any helmets sold with these ratings.. and NOT an additional ECE are not legal here in the UK and EU. DOT is a US Government standard.. and Snell is effectively an independent add-on. Sharp is a UK Government safety rating system that is supposedly independent and measures helmets in a slightly different way and gives some insight how helmets that meet the ECE standard perform without any regard of the price. "Off the shelf" Helmets vary wildly in price.. from £30 Aldi Specials. to £600+ they are all just as legal.. but paying extra comes with benefits.. often huge benefits. In my opinion there is absolutely nothing wrong with a new biker with very limited funds buying an Aldi special. Or indeed anything wrong with someone with more disposable money spending £500+ on a helmet that meets a list of that riders requirements. For ECE helmets... by far the most important factor.. far higher than price or anything else is how well the helmet fits. That absolutley must be the start point.

It's normally best to listen to the manufacturers and i think its safe to say that D.I.D. know a thing or two about their chains and how they should be maintained. On the back of the box they keep it simple. And as I've already suggested in this thread. They recommend you clean the chain with Kerosene (parrafin) and lubricate it with SAE 80W-90 (gear oil)

He's not! Unless he is masking his IP address to sky broadband! So an expat.. where in America did he come from? And if he is using WD40 as chain lube.. how often is it applied and is the bike used in the wet? and.. does his bike have a battery?

plenty of people do that.... and then join forums like this, or post on FB to complain about how quickly their original chain has worn out and what is best to replace it with. I think the confusion with modern chains comes with the use of the word 'lube'.. we only need to very slightly lubricate a modern chain as there is only a very small area of direct 'metal on metal' contact within the chains structure at the side plates. (arrowed) The primary reason for lubing a chain is to prevent rust. if rust appears between the side plates then the chain will rapidly lose its ability to 'flex'.. it will become stiff and wear out. So.. we apply oil.. or whatever 'water resiatant' product of choice.. to stop water getting at the bare metal and causing rust.. and premature wear. As well as keeping the entire chain looking good.

For that to happen, the rubber rings must swell. Hasn't happened with my X-ring chain. He said wash off.. not wash out. little differences like this are important in British English. where in America are you? One of the drier 'desert' states maybe?

Ive been using gear oil. no rust. no gunge build-up. just a clean chain protected from the elements.
  25. Perfectly fine at slower speeds. (Sub 40 mph) above that there is too much resistance and it's hard work.
