Hearing Protection
Shepherd replied to Working Class Hero's topic in Clothing, Luggage, Accessories and Security
To be honest, the Eggz were barely noticeable every time I used them. Couldn't feel them at all. Nice and quiet, but I just couldn't deal with the removal of them. I have a 'thing' about objects / insects etc getting stuck in my ears and not being able to remove them straight away was a problem. That said, I still use them from time to time, it depends what jacket I put on as I keep them in the pocket. Nifty little storage tube for them, but the loops one is quicker and clips to bike key ring without damaging the paint. I can feel the loops sometimes, but it's not a problem. I find they just 'drop in' to position and form a good seal. I use Loop "quiet" , not the motorcycle ones. A few decibels more reduction in noise, but I can still hear what I need to. The different sizes is a nice touch too - especially as my daughter uses them and we exchange the unused sizes with each other. Easier to keep clean too, in my experience. Hope this helps. -

I'm also a tinnitus sufferer, and wear ear plugs on every journey. Eggz are the best fit for me, but I struggle so much trying to remove them. The little tab is way too small for me to grab. I switched to Loops, and find them just as good and a lot easier to remove. Also, it's a case of getting a good 'seal' and not just ramming earplugs in as far as they'll go. My right ear takes the loop plug fine every time, but in my left ear I have to insert the loop and pull it out just a little. Oh-err missus! I also adjusted my screen for the Summer to make it lower and having the air flow against my chest instead of failing to get it to go over top of my lid. -
https://www.cmsnl.com/ For the extremely limited bits I've purchased, takes 3 or 4 days but the website makes identifying the parts a little easier. Wemoto too. Not tried Fowlers though, but I know others here use them too.

Been out and about a couple of times, with and without using rear brake. Disc temps are fairly equal, so must have been an odd reading before. Still got the squeal though, after pumping the pistons out as far as I dare to give them a clean. Looks like it's off to the bike garage after the weekend for a brake service

Will try a ride tomorrow without back brake if possible. I do use the back brake, but not a lot. Brakes aren't linked. Thanks for the replies.

Forgive the possibly daft question ... Should my rear brake disc be hotter than the front? I had a brake squeal, from what I thought was the front. Removed calipers and cleaned up pistons and the pin that goes through the pads on both front discs and the single rear one. Still had the squeal, but now not sure if it's front or rear, so I took my temp reader to them and the rear was at 40° against 25° on the fronts. Made me wonder if the rear is binding a little, or if the front are air cooled against the rear next to exhaust etc? Got a weekend of a few hundred miles coming up, and don't want to have a problem. Bike is a Versys 650 mk3, so no centre stand to easily get the wheels in the air.

signal at a splitting road
Shepherd replied to hoycch's topic in CBT, Test and Advanced Training Information
It's not a change of direction, so I wouldn't signal. I'd position myself so that I'd carry on in to the left hand lane and continue straight. My instructor told me not to signal to go past a parked bus whilst doing my lessons - it didn't help anyone behind me as they could see what I had to do anyway. -
Got snapped at the Burnham Bends with my daughter pillion. Had the picture printed on a 5'x3' canvas and stuck it on the bike shed wall. One of my first rides out with a pillion, and I still smile whenever I open the door to put the bike away. I consider myself lucky that my daughter still wants to spend time with an old git like me

Failed Mod 1 - need pepping up
Shepherd replied to Tigs's topic in CBT, Test and Advanced Training Information
I found it tough until I read on this forum about applying a few more revs, but with a little rear brake applied. Looking where you want to go is easier said than done, but force yourself to do it just for the test. Remember, it's just half of the figure 8 that you find easier (we'll, I did). Keep up the practising, it'll sort itself out. Never needed to do one since... -
Got one of these a while ago, along with an extra fob. I keep a fob in both my winter jacket, and summer jacket after too many false alarms when wearing the wrong one. (Don't keep fob with your keys!). Feel a bit daft taking my jacket with me just to get the bike out of it's shed for a wash etc though.

Great bike, and quite forgiving of my inexperienced riding. Just factor in the cost of a Booster Plug to even out the jerky throttle response - makes a world of difference.

It's a great app, use it often - wish it was U.K. wide https://londonbikebays.co.uk/map/ Have to remember to pay the token £1 if in Westminster Borough though!

Rear ended whilst stationery at a roundabout, dropped a bloody heavy deauville on to my 7st daughters knee. Still get the guilt trips 2 years later

I did my bikesafe course recently, and questioned the Police instructor why I could see him all over the other lane in my mirrors. His reply was "why not if it's safe to do so, and gives better view around a bend?" I did the same after our initial debrief and was praised for doing so, and 'making progress ' along the lanes. Straighter roads were different, keeping to middle etc, but a totally different way of riding for me.

Failed CBT because of a U-Turn???
Shepherd replied to areyoudizzy's topic in CBT, Test and Advanced Training Information
I hated u-turns, until I was told to go a little more on the throttle with back brake lightly applied. The difference was night and day. Try it, even just a couple of times - it can't hurt. -

Not knowing one end of a spanner from t'other, I don't normally read resto threads ... but this had me hooked from the very beginning. Great thread, congratulations on the end product, it looks great. Shep -

Module 2 - members test experiences
Shepherd replied to a topic in CBT, Test and Advanced Training Information
Congratulations, it's a great feeling, isn't it? And fair play to the examiner, who could quite easily have failed you and gone inside to keep dry. I would be having words with the instructor and school though - but hey, you passed so who cares? -
I called local council too, for the same problem. Although I'm not a tenant of theirs, they were really helpful and didn't charge the earth. I now use the sonic deterrents for a few weeks once the cold weather starts, and not had a problem for a few years now.

Actually, Market Road is not that far from the station.
-
Sorry, no idea! If there's any doubt, I wouldn't chance it. I always use the m/c bays in Market Road - opposite where Evoke nightclub used to be. No charges or time limits that I've seen. I only use Chelmo for shopping or drinking, so never there too long.
-
You can park in the High Chelmer car park for free on the ground floor, left hand side. 5 -10 minute walk to station.

I'm not as tall as you at 6'1", but I'm long in the body which makes me look like a bag of folded washing on a lot of bikes. I narrowed it down to a couple, the bike I have now is a Versys 650 and I love it. Just added handlebar risers to make my positioning quite natural and comfortable. (I think the other bikes I was going to check was the V-Strom and Triumph Tiger? The V fitted me, so I looked no more). Check out https://cycle-ergo.com/ to narrow it down a little. Shep

Think I can nominate myself (again). After spending too long laying patio and path, I thought it'd be best to put my work clothes in the machine separately from everything, to avoid normal clothes sharing the load, and to save my Wife having to do it. So in go 2 pairs of jeans and half a dozen t-shirts, all filthy dirty with cement dust, sand and mud etc. Now the machine has given up. Drained the sump of the very gritty water, took out the filter and chipped off the cement the was stuck fast. I think the whole system is coated internally with a nice mix of portland and sharp sand! I thought I was being helpful ...
