I always thought they were mainly there to catch debris from the manufacturing process.. if you have bits of crank, bearing or gears coming off you have a bigger problems!! It all has to pass through the oil filter and with modern filter technology, can anything pass through the filter that shouldn't? Back in the olden days i could imagine filters weren't so efficient so magnetic plugs made more sense.

That's what i was thinking, and being so much more convenient than pulling the sump plug means you could change your oil much more frequently which would remove the sludge I'd there was any.. but as Mr Fro says, on bikes the clutch is probably in the way..

Torx heads are so much cooler than allen bolts. harder to round off too

In the USA they have drive through oil change shops... clearly people over there feel the need to change their oil more regularly than we do over here. If garages still had oil suction pumps it would be great!!

Lidl had oil change suction pumps on offer a few days ago. The idea is they suck the oil out of the dipstick tube on cars to save having to crawl underneath to pull the sumpplug. Anyone tried one on a motorcycle?? It would save people shearing sump bolts if they worked!!

taking your helmet off takes time... but standing at the pump whilst you munch your pasty, crisps and drink, check your social media, answer a few threads on TMBF, before eventually putting your helmet and gloves back on and finally riding away can take even more time...

Most trickle chargers have reverse polarity protection. if the battery is really flat the voltage isn't high enough for the charger to correctly identify​ the polarity so it won't start charging. That's why your gel cell charger is helping as it will just charge regardless of polarity getting the battery upto a voltage high enough for the trickle charger to work. You can trick trickle chargers by putting another battery in parallel just long enough for the charge process to start after which it won't bother checking polarity again.

Battery sounds like it's not holding charge... Reg/rec sounds fine as it's supplying a good voltage. New battery time IMO.
