Bright white lights

What could be easier? Stick it in drive and move away, and put it in park at the end of your journey and optionally apply the handbrake before you get out.

My Audi A6 has the same electronic handbrake. Just a little switch. I only ever use it when I park, never at lights or in traffic, theres just no need to use the handbrake.

Is it really easier?

1. Stop at lights, leave foot on brake. Let off and press throttle to go.

2. Stop at lights, press button. Press again and press throttle to go.

Different strokes for different folks, but as a manual driver it's built into me to apply handbrake. Not having to was a novelty until I realised I didn't like having to hold the brake as in my manual I could stretch or let my legs go limp as I relaxed waiting for the lights to change.

Either way, an auto dim feature wouldn't go amiss would it? As in stop/start traffic where you'd probably just use brake/throttle it would make the poor person behind have a nicer journey!

In fact with mine, if the handbrake is on if I press the accelerator it releases itself so don't even need to take it off!

What bugs me is the reverse light flash between park and drive. Would be very easy to only light the reverse light if in reverse longer than maybe half a second.

With the handbrake auto releasing I have to say auto's are becoming more popular in my mind! :)

I know what you mean with the reverse light.

Thing is it shows a cheap design, reliable but annoying switching circuits. A basic and tiny microcontroller circuit acting parent to some relays would solve the issue of it flashing as you go to park, and it could also double up as a dimmer for the brake light intensity. A little system like that would last longer than the car as well.

I design systems that do little extra functions like this all day at the new job, so I know it's easy. If I can do it, they definitely can.

Newer BMW's and electronic shifters will not flash the reverse light. foz it's not as easy as flicking a switch, set hand brake, then before you pull off you have to put foot on the brake to select drive again. In traffic that's a pain as much as a clutch. This is why autos in traffic make sense, just hold brake. Mercs and BMW also have brake hold assist so when you stop it auto brakes so you can relax ;)

Manual Hand brakes left on whilst in drive with a torque converter box isn't a problem in traffic (not extended periods) but not a good idea with DSG type boxes.

Back to the original question about bright lights, the car behind you may well have been driving on his daylight driving lights, which is technically illegal in restricted visibility conditions, i.e night, fog or other serious weather conditions, specifically because they are not angled down and will dazzle other drivers. Short of starting a road rage incident by forcing the other driver to stop, you could try taking the number and reporting it to the police, or my personal preference would be to fix a torch or other light to your rear rack operated by a button on the handlebar, and see how he likes it with a beam shining in his eyes. :D

I'd like to take a moment to welcome you to my world. Every light is too bright. The only reason I use my own is so that others can see me, and then i make a point of pointing them as far down as possible. If i want to see, I look over the top of my glasses.

I have come across a few headlights that are extra bright though, and they are like having a small sun pointing at you. You know its badly fitted when you can inspect your nails in the glow...

... I so totally do not now work for a company who specialise in making bright white lights (And rear lamps) for high end sports cars :seeya:

I'm so sorry! Please don't banish me from the brethren! :crybaby:

You're lucky you've built up some points liking board games

Agreed ;-)

Although I fitted white DRL to my bike earlier on in the year, I have no idea if they are too bright. I tried my best to find guidelines but failed. :-/ They appear to be around the brightness of Audi DRL, but only about 1/4 strip of them in total. :-/

My new Merc has their LED lights fitted.

Whilst for me they're brilliant. For others they appear to be too bright. Can't do a lot about them, The car came with them and I can't even angle them down as they're automagic. Though I do think newer car windows are slightly more tinted. Other lights don't seem to affect me as much in this car than before.

Hate people sitting on their brakes in traffic, red led's blazing into the retina

That's anyone with an auto gearbox. Get used to it because more and more cars are being sold with auto boxes.

Not me mate. I use the hand brake in my auto. I don't see the point in having to sit holding the brakes on. It's just lazy not using the handbrake. Oh and I just flick the gearknob to knock it out of gear and then flick it back into drive while taking the handbrake off. It's not hard

My merc has an auto hold feature: come to stop, engine stops as well by the way, press brake pedal hard and brakes lock on, I assume no brake lights on, then relax until lights change, as soon as I touch the throttle the engine restarts and brakes come off. Easy peasy. :)

Your brake lights should still be on with your auto hold Dave ;)

My Merc has auto hold too. But I have the distronic option. When it sits in traffic, It doesn't hold the brake lights on. It's holding the brake "on it's own" and will move off on it's own too. Only slowing down does it put them on. Infact, I think it puts them on if it's the last car in the queue. Until another joins. I'll test this :thumb:

If you get too much grief about the DRL LED's, their power supply will be a simple wire in, wire out set up. Just splice it and run a fairly big resistor in parallel. That will dim them down a smidge

The whole car is LED. There isn't a traditional bulb in it! The headlights on full beam are sooooo bright!

not as simple as that when it come to canbus systems!!

besides you can get them dimmed down properly by using the appropriate diagnostics software!

you should be able to lower them if you really want to!

not sure if it will be the same on the mercs but on vw seat audi's and scoda there is an adjuster on the actual headlight to raise or lower them

you have to follow a procedure for it to work though you cant just turn it and hope for the best

Didn't think the DRL's would be on a canbus setup! It's doable, just you have to isolate the v+ and 0v cores and splice a resistor to them. But if it's computer controlled, rather than relay controlled, then getting them dimmed down via a plug and play is the way to go.

Are LED headlights self levelling? Or can they be adjusted like regular headlights?

 Is this the beginning of the robot uprising? My last car had lights that came on when you pressed stuff and went off when you stopped pressing stuff

I currently have an 03 battered up Micra  haha

She is so non-fancy it's adorable!

My lights work beautifully.. In the middle of a town or city or A-road with street lights..

On anything else I just have to be thankful my eyesight is really good in the dark!

When I first rode through the night on the Sprint I was terrified I was blinding everyone around me because she's So Bright

If you are having real issues with eye strain you can get glasses and even visors with a yellow tint. They make all lights look like yellow street lights and do not dazzle. I don't ride so much in the dark as I used to, but when I did I would wear them.

We are edging towards automatic cars that drive you to your destination.

Imagine a system that will solve most congestion issues, and be safer for bikes.

For manually driven vehicles the system will just play by the rules of the road, and have some settings for filtering in with manually driven cars/bikes.

Will also hurt the government as speed cameras will become more or less obsolete, and in my eyes that's a beautiful thing
