RantMachine Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 More info here: http://www.intellectualtakeout.org/blog/why-we-need-alpha-malesJust started reading this and no offense XTreme but holy heck what a load of crap As Annie asked, “Where have all the good men gone?” Well, they’ve been beaten down. Many of them lack a strong father at home, having been raised by a single mother. And why would that be? Where were all the "alpha males" of the previous generation? And if the fathers ran out because they weren't alpha enough, who was responsible for messing them up? Seriously though, yeah the world needs strong people to help overcome the challenges our society inevitably faces. But that article makes the assumption throughout that it takes a Y chromosome to be strong, and that's the kind of mentality that people are really starting to have an issue with. The concept of masculinity has just been caught in the crossfire. And side note: Aren't the "wolves" alpha males within their own civilisations/cultures? Quote
MR_W Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 The alpha Wolf is usually a female unless I am much mistaken. People are definitely too scared of being prosecuted themselves. Hell I wouldn't approach a young lost child to check they were ok unless I had females with me as I am fairly certain I'd end up being branded a paedophile when just trying to help. People are very quick to accuse those of helping of doing something wrong. Quote

Joe85 Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 I see another 70's 80's abuse scandal is breaking, this time with young footballers. I can see this one going bigger than the BBC, imagine how many other sports could be dragged into this. Quote

And if the fathers ran out because they weren't alpha enough, who was responsible for messing them up? I'm sorry but the more I read this the worse it gets: "Only two come close to the traditional portrayals of strong, men. One is Captain America. And even he is a super hero, not a real man."This is such a ridiculous statement to make. You don't have to be any where near a comic book nerd, you literally have to watch the first film, to know that: He is a real man. In fact he's a short, weak Runt who gets beaten down at every turn because he's not 6'4" and built like a Stud. There's a point in the movie where he gets the stuffing beaten out of him but a mucho masculine Bad boy and yet he Still fights for what's good and right! He IS the androgynous, in touch man that this article hates so much. He is chosen, from a line up of handsome strong men, to be "Captain America" because he threw himself on a grenade to save other people. Nothing to do with Brawn.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v620E6ozrKIHe is the very opposite of the "Real Man" this article is bleating about and yet they're holding him up on a platform, because they think he's a hunk super soldier. If that isn't missing the whole bloody point, I really don't know what is. Quote
Guest Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 Some very interesting responses going on here. Many areas which I hadn't considered. The Saville case and others that have come to light, yes, lots of people with power and influence, either partaking or just letting it go on without doing anything. Ok, driving in your car doing a running commentary to the police is somewhat a little to far. As I say, it has to something within reason. But everyone will have their different ideas of what is reasonable and I guess you'd have to really work hard a building some sort of base level. Anyway cheers all for the responses so far. Remember, keep it civil Quote
Gin Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 Remember, keep it civil Apologies.. The Saville case and others that have come to light, yes, lots of people with power and influence, either partaking or just letting it go on without doing anything. So one thing I keep thinking in this thread is that this is way more than what should I / You do.. So my mum was working at the BBC when Jimmy Saville was a prominent star and I talked to her about how it was then. She told me "Well you would go to the lunch hall and get your bum pinched, or a comment on your legs. It wasn't abnormal and was just part of the culture. I think this is why it's taken so long for this behaviour to come out of the wood work, because it was far more acceptable then for men to hit on the young intern or secretary and they should be grateful for the attention"I do think this sort of hits the nail on the head. It's all about the culture of the time. Then it was all about having the hot bird on your arm to show how well you were doing in life... If the culture at the time deemed "Hot" to be pert boobs and a fresh face, then it's only logical that younger and younger women would be the "Prize" I agree that just filming something awful and putting in Youtube can be cowardly, callous and cold but equally a side effect of this is that with social media and the internet connecting the whole world, we're able to bring light to injustices that otherwise people might never have known about. It's all about the culture of the time. Quote
Throttled Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 I think the modern message has to be comfy in your own skin. Stereotypes are being eroded, cross over and merging of sexuality, style, job types etc mean we do not have the be comfy in your own gender and role boxes any more. Quote

Stu Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 Ffs, that explains it.. It's "men" like that who are putting up the price of our breakdown insurance... ! I blame the parents! I was brought up knowing how to do this sort of thing I had to change a bulb the nephew (Tracey's brothers son so not directly related!! ) I let him near the tools to remove his rear lights! he didn't even know how to use a frigging ratchet!! I blame his dad for not teaching him any life skills! My other nephew (brothers son) was undoing nuts and bolts at the age of 3! that wasn't good for my dad as he had just put them on Quote
Hoggs Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 I work with women who don't know how to change the wiper blades on their cars, top up the coolant or other very basic maintenance- neither of them express any desire whatsoever to learn these things. Why are we saying only men should know this stuff or berate men who don't know this stuff? Stu has hit the nail on the head that kids are not being taught this and in a world of garages and breakdown service a lot of people feel they do not need to know it. It's easier just to pay someone else to do it. The only reason I attempt so much stuff on the bike (and previously when I had cars, or just stuff like re-wiring a plug) is because - and I am sure this will not come as a surprise to anyone - I grew up being shown and taught how things work and also it's better to fix things than throw them away. Also that kid in the video probably also can't make a victoria sponge but we probably won't mock him for that because men shouldn't know stuff like that Quote

Joeman Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 I can do anything I attempt to do, and that's the philosophy I'm raising my daughter with. She helps me out all the time with tools and is very helpful to have about when im holding something together and can't reach the tool i need to fasten it up.. she'll be four years old in February and I'm pretty sure she would have a better idea how to use that car jack than the useless idiot in that video.Last week I needed to dispose of a washing machine, it was too heavy to lift through the house and into the car on my own so between us we decided to dismantle it to make it easier to get to the tip. She had great fun with my tools - the hammer was her favourite.. a great father/daughter thing to do! Quote
Stu Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 sounds like you need to hit the gym Joe Any "real" man would have just lifted that washer........ Quote

Had visions of dropping it and making a huge dent in the wood!!Plus I wanted to see what was inside and save any of the good stuff to stash away in my garage that will come in handy probably never Quote
