fastbob Posted August 29, 2020 Author Posted August 29, 2020 So now that it runs the next move is to drop all the fluids and take the whole bike apart . The frame is going to take some serious rust removal but the swinging arm is probably scrap . I'll pull the barrels off to see what the piston rings are like but apart from that everything else is just cosmetic . The job I'm not looking forward to is removing the front mudguard . I haven't even looked but I know that those four bolts will be salt eroded to oblivion . Quote
WD-40 Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 Nice one Might be a good idea to take it for a short run and go through all the gears to make sure the gearbox is good before you take it apart Quote

Mr Fro Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Some of that look grim Bob.Have you thought about cafe racering it? Quote
fastbob Posted August 31, 2020 Author Posted August 31, 2020 Some of that look grim Bob.Have you thought about cafe racering it? Nah . I'm going to the outer Hebrides on this . I get where you're coming from though . Quote
fastbob Posted August 31, 2020 Author Posted August 31, 2020 will you be keeping it silver Bob Good question. The plastics are ok but the tank has deep scratches and a little dent in each side . I'll probably do what I did with the last one . Find a decent tank in any colour and spray the plastics to match . There is another alternative but this is a £300 bike and I don't want to sink any more money than strictly necessary into it . It would look nice though .... Quote
skyrider Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 yes when i got my cb 500 a guy a few miles away wanted £500 to spray the tank, seat fairing, tank plastics and the front mudguard and thats not too far away from what i paid for the bike so i thought sod it and sprayed it with rattle cans and it looked ok Quote

Have a look at some of the auto car paint suppliers, they would be able to supply a 2k clear rattle can Quote
Snod Blatter Posted September 1, 2020 Posted September 1, 2020 I'm ok using Rattle Cans but I can't seem to find a suitable Clear Coat that is petrol resistant . C'mon bob it's easy.. https://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-and-body-repair/specialist-and-decorative-paints/halfords-petrol-resistant-lacquer-300ml-768697.htmlAlso, just because I'm posting, I wouldn't bother taking the barrels off. It picks up well from idle, the rattles go away, you don't seem to be choking on smoke.. There can't be much wrong with that! Quote

Snod Blatter Posted September 1, 2020 Posted September 1, 2020 Have you read the reviews in that link ? Bloody awful stuff by most accounts . Hmm yes, certainly "mixed" But some googling does suggest that it might be people not reading the instructions on the can, the complaints do seem to echo those in the reviews. I also see this Simoniz stuff gets some awful reviews too, can so many people really be getting it wrong? It does actually seem possible! The Simoniz can be had from Euro Car Parts too which makes it a very reasonable price though its petrol resistance seems up for debate. ECP do also sell some specifically petrol resistant lacquer but that product is completely unknown/untested. Quote
fastbob Posted September 1, 2020 Author Posted September 1, 2020 (edited) Engine out . I thought I might have had a fight on my hands given the amount of salt induced corrosion on the bike but all the bolts gave in easily . The Harley bike lift came in very handy . I wish I'd had one of those for the last engine swap . So now it's just a case of having a good tidy up before I start on the rust . I'll be using a drill so I'm open to suggestions as to the best attachments to use . Wire brush , flap wheel or both ? Edited September 1, 2020 by fastbob Quote

skyrider Posted September 1, 2020 Posted September 1, 2020 i have to say i didn't have the cb5 long enough to find out if it was any good or not Quote
Snod Blatter Posted September 1, 2020 Posted September 1, 2020 When I was getting the rust off the CB250 (project still pending) a wire brush wasn't really enough, if you have a flap wheel to hand for the particularly crusty bits it'll be useful. Quote
fastbob Posted September 2, 2020 Author Posted September 2, 2020 Oops , now I've gone and done it . I'm going to have to up my game a bit to match the standard of this bodywork . Quote

fastbob Posted September 2, 2020 Author Posted September 2, 2020 i see that you have gone for the blue Couldn't let that pass . I'll hopefully get half my money back when I sell my existing tank and bodywork . Quote
