fastbob Posted September 3, 2020 Author Posted September 3, 2020 (edited) Something to aim for . So you're not planning this for next summer then? If I had a swinging arm and possibly some piston rings ( If required ) I could do this in under two weeks . All I've got to do is take the rust off the frame and paint it , scrub and paint the engine and fit some new bars and grips . I haven't looked in detail at the forks yet but I suspect new seals might be in order . Most of the components taken off the bike have already been inspected , cleaned and painted where necessary .I've just acquired a full set of plastics and a tank so that cuts out all the painting and prep . Final assembly would take less than a day . So if I didn't have to go to work , eat and sleep I'd be riding it by now . Edited October 4, 2020 by fastbob Quote
KiwiBob Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Engine out . I thought I might have had a fight on my hands given the amount of salt induced corrosion on the bike but all the bolts gave in easily . The Harley bike lift came in very handy . I wish I'd had one of those for the last engine swap . So now it's just a case of having a good tidy up before I start on the rust . I'll be using a drill so I'm open to suggestions as to the best attachments to use . Wire brush , flap wheel or both ? fastbob Posted September 3, 2020 Author Posted September 3, 2020 Got up , had a shave , removed the Oil Filter , had another shave . Managed to crush the filter and break the wrench at the same time . Quote
fastbob Posted September 5, 2020 Author Posted September 5, 2020 Removed all four front mudguard bolts in under ten minutes . Now this may not sound like much of an achievement to some of you but if you've worked on an ER5 before you'll know that this is nothing less than a f*****g miracle ! Some saintly person had been there before me a long time ago and applied Copperslip . Now I've unexpectedly got the rest of the day to spend as I wish . Quote

The dab of oil applied to the O ring was also long gone . Sticktion rather than pressure . Quote

linuxrob Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Check that they are 1.25mm pitch if so they will fit. you will be able to measure the sprocket bolts thread pitch with a steel rule. Kays and other std bolt suppliers use our standards for threads etc, 1.25mm is metric fine, std course thread stuff is cheep as chips these are 14mm accross flats like std but SS and cost a lothttp://www.inoxbolt.co.uk/zen/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=449_672&products_id=2270These are the people i would go to Bobhttp://www.z-power.co.uk/sprocket-nut-set-6-x-self-locknot SS but new and self lock if you do not have a tab washerrob b Quote
fastbob Posted September 12, 2020 Author Posted September 12, 2020 That's the frame painted . I used a combination of Hammerite Smoothrite sprayed and brushed . My aim was to give it a lasting rust proof coating rather than a perfect finish . Very little of the frame is on view anyway . Quote
fastbob Posted September 17, 2020 Author Posted September 17, 2020 So I got another Swinging Arm with a bit more metal left in it and ground all the rust and flakey paint off and then gave it the Scotch Pad treatment . I brush painted all the underneath and inside bits with Smoothrite from a tin and while it was still tacky I spray painted the more cosmetic top and side bits . I've put it inside the frame because Bob the cat looks like he might knock it over for a laugh . Quote
fastbob Posted September 18, 2020 Author Posted September 18, 2020 Just a little mock up to see what it looks like . Ignor the shock obviously . I probably ought to have done the Swinging Arm in black like the last one to be honest but it's done now . There's even less of it on view once the Under Tray and Footpeg Hangers are on . When you do stuff like this it make you realise just how little there is to a a basic motorbike . Hard to see why people get in such a pickle over doing routine maintenance sometimes . Quote
