Slowlycatchymonkey Posted February 24, 2021 Posted February 24, 2021 Practicality wins out every time over looks for long term touring and offroading (which have different priorities) unless people prefer to make things harder for themselves for the sake of aesthetics. 1 Quote

I think the soft panniers are sometimes preferred by peeps riding a lot off-road where they are deemed a bit safer in some situations. Nick Sanders runs off road “adventure tours” in the Pyrenees. He insists that the riders joining him use soft luggage for a number of reasons. Mostly because of the safety aspect and also if you drop a bike on aluminium panniers they will permanently deform and become useless. Quote
Slowlycatchymonkey Posted February 24, 2021 Posted February 24, 2021 I’ve used soft panniers for off roading and given them one hell of a bashing, theyre good in those circumstances (although the surviving contents were far from good ) I’ve used them for gentler events where tarmac and facilities are available and in those circumstances I’ve envied the metal panniers being used by relaxed campers sitting in a chair stirring a pot at a convenient height. Horses for courses. 1 Quote

I got a few good rides in during last year delivering stuff to various charities and care homes. Especially the places on the West of the Lake District. Returning home over the passes on nearly empty roads was wonderful. Edited February 25, 2021 by Steve_M 3 Quote

As Screwfix if 14miles away, and Google maps sends me a scenic route, it was a perfectly legal reason and Route. I didn’t even extend it to go get petrol. Damn. 1 Quote

The shortest* route is using the B6413, which just happens to be quite scenic, rural with some interesting twists and turns. *The M6 route is quicker but I do feel the shorter route is the one I should take. 2 Quote
S-Westerly Posted February 25, 2021 Author Posted February 25, 2021 Well tomorrow I am out on the bike as I'm legitimately part of my son's support network and need to drop something off to his place west of Bristol. A46 will do to start. Then I need to pick up some fish on the way home so will cross the bridge to Wales just to trail my coat then up the A 48 to Westbury and then home via Gloucester. Legitimately as far as I'm concerned. 1 Quote
Slowlycatchymonkey Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 I do like the varying degree’s of legit The shortest route is clearly most sensible as is picking up a fish supper on the way home- making use of one journey for two purposes is environmentally friendly Quote
S-Westerly Posted February 25, 2021 Author Posted February 25, 2021 Absolutely so. The fish will not be cooked though that I'll be doing myself and what exactly it will be depends on what the fish monger has. Quote

Is the bbq for that fish stored in a beach hut 100 miles away? Quote
