onesea Posted December 11, 2020 Posted December 11, 2020 I have regular free supply of MCN's I cannot say I read them from cover to cover. However they have historically been superb at lighting fires. 4 Pages of MCN and I could skip kindling ang go straight to small logs, this year the paper will not even burn. Next on the list is Amazon wrapping paper and that strange corrugated/ shredded cardboard which is truly excellent, but there is only so much you can order to get the stuff... Anyway back on my knees to try again 1 1 Quote
Ian Frog Posted December 11, 2020 Posted December 11, 2020 I tend to blame the moisture content of some of the sh*t they print for the slump in fire lighting properties. Cheers Ian 1 Quote
Slowlycatchymonkey Posted December 11, 2020 Posted December 11, 2020 I was chatting to someone who went round the world on their motorbike and they regaled the tale of how rude and patronising MCN were to her, decades later the same dinosaur attitude allowed them the luxury of being extremely rude to a friend of mine. Along the lines of haha silly girly you can’t possibly go and do that. Although the on the last one they did eventually apologise and publish a piece because she went and she did. So even though I still enjoy reading it, lighting the fire with it and watching it go up in smoke makes me smile a wee bit but not quite as much as using it as puppy litter 3 Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted December 11, 2020 Posted December 11, 2020 (edited) Make the most of it while you can. A friend who works in paper and cardboard says that companies are stockpiling because supplies post Brexit deadline are going to be a problem. His packaging costs went up 15% today, guess who is going to end up covering that extra cost? Edited December 11, 2020 by Mississippi Bullfrog Quote

Gerontious Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 1 hour ago, Slowlycatchymonkey said: Why? Because it’s not very good? week in week out, nothing of interest. more ads than content. the magazines were far more interesting at the time. I had a subscription to motorcycle international which I thought was a great read. sadly it vanished years ago. it often had features on European touring as well as a less sport bike focus. bear in mind this was a time before adventure bikes were a thing and almost the entire bike press was fixated on sport bikes. which as a GS owner I found dull. Monster Trail Bikes as they were called then were hugely popular in Europe and there were often features on that segment written by French/Italian and German contributors. Bikes like the GS, G/S. Africa Twin. Triumph Tiger and so on - a different angle on these bikes which were more often than not figures of fun in the British Bike press. Also touring hardly got a mention and BMWs were "old mens bikes" that British magazines were more inclined to mock when they were mentioned at all outside of a (new model) review, Was a very different time and attitude. Slowlycatchymonkey Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 Looked up monster trail bikes cos it’s a great name and now it seems to be all bicycles. Different times indeed, now the range of bikes, articles and mags dedicated to touring and off road routes is bigger than you can shake a stick at! Quote
skyrider Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 i stopped buying mcn fifteen years ago because it was full of plastic rockets and adverts Quote

They do now have 2 female reporters, Emma Franklin ( Deputy Editor ) & Alison Silcox ( Office Manager) Or do you think they are they just Tokes? I admit to buying it every week, however it does still have a very blokey feel. Quote

I understand the main protagonist of all that was arcane has retired now so perhaps the old boys club is changing. Nothing wrong with a blokey feel to something but rude and dismissive.. @XTreme They wrote Elspeth a patronising humiliating letter telling her she couldn’t do it, I think she touches on that in her book, can’t remember! Elspeth returned put the bike away and never thought about it much again until donkeys later when BMW told her she was the first British woman to go round the world on a motorbike. MCN never published anything about it. The article they did publish was for someone else recently they’d dismissed who they at least apologised to. Problem with keeping the old guard in place is that by our very nature as we get older we like things to stay the same, particularly if the same is in our favour. Quote

skyrider Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 and another reason i fell out with mcn a lot of years ago it was just before a TT and the only thing about the event in the rag was one paragraph and then it was back onto the latest plastic rockets and adverts and that finished me with it and i never bought it again Quote

She told me they are interested in buying the rights to make a film about her trip. Now that’s something I’d like to see! The towers impressive and an enormous undertaking for anyone let alone a single mum. When I first met her about 3 years ago I told my husband about her and he expected a little old lady! Quote
