fastbob Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 I would imagine that the exhaust would need to come off . As for what's involved , a new sump and gasket and a lot of lying on your back remembering which way to turn a bolt that's upside down while watching the blood oose from your frozen knuckles . Quote
James in Brum Posted February 13, 2021 Author Posted February 13, 2021 Thanks Rob so far my shopping list looks like; exhaust gasket sump gasket sump so replacement bolts (at least one the head is turned so the Allen key does nothing) new oil filter some new oil. what else? Quote
James in Brum Posted February 13, 2021 Author Posted February 13, 2021 Are there gaskets for the oil cooler pipes where they connect to the sump? I should get my manual this afternoon but some of you just know this stuff. Quote
oldgrump Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 Hi @James in Brum, have you got a pressure washer mate? first thing I would do is give it a bloody good clean down, so you can track where the oil is coming from! It look's like you've had a slight leak near rear of case, hence build up of black oil! but give it a good wash, then if you still can't see leak, check oil level in bike, then get someone to start it up, But yes to change sump you'll be best to take exhaust off, give's you more room Quote
James in Brum Posted February 13, 2021 Author Posted February 13, 2021 Thanks for the advice. I will borrow my BiLs pressure washer. I will clean it all down in advance of doing the work. the was a leak on the generator case a while ago it I sorted that. I just had not done it up enough Quote
James in Brum Posted February 13, 2021 Author Posted February 13, 2021 What exhaust gaskets do I get? I did a seaRich on Fleabay and they seem to be copper rings. Does that sound right? Quote

oldgrump Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 Yes, most are copper rings nowadays. Quote
fastbob Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 Copper ones are best . Gouge out the old ones with a screwdriver and bung the new ones in with a good dollop of silicone sealer a day before you fit the exhaust . Quote
James in Brum Posted February 13, 2021 Author Posted February 13, 2021 Bathroom silicone sealer? thanks for heads up about bolts. thanks for confirming the rings. Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 Are there exhaust sensors on the bike? Be wary of silicon if there are because it can contaminate lambda sensors. Quote
James in Brum Posted February 13, 2021 Author Posted February 13, 2021 No idea, will check the manual Quote

Dosen't really matter . It's just to hold them in place when you're lining everything up and trying to juggle several things at once . 1 Quote

James in Brum Posted February 19, 2021 Author Posted February 19, 2021 This morning I took the rest of the plastics off the front (never done that before! ) I undid the fixings at the top of the radiator and lifted it off of the gromit space thing so it had a bit more play (never done that before) I have undone all the exhaust fixings and it is now hanging low out of the way of the sump (never done that) I undid the oil cooler pipes and removed from the sump (you know the line) I undid all the sump bolts. (NDTB) the sump would not come away with a bit of tapping and it is raining so I have come inside. I cannot quite see the bottom of the sump properly to see the leak. I can see two bits of metal that look like sump material. do I just hammer the sump off to break the seal? Do I use a leaver? Do I give up and call @fastbob and offer him money to mend my errors? Have you made sure there are no sneaky fixings, you may have missed? Have you removed the oil filter? If you are confident that all fixings have been removed the tapping with a hard rubber hammer around the sump can do it, it you can see anywhere you can get leverage to prize it off - use a piece of wood not a screwdriver as if you damage the surface the sump mates to you will have a never ending oil leak. James in Brum Posted February 19, 2021 Author Posted February 19, 2021 Thanks @Micklyi have not remove oil filter yet. Do I need to to stop a vacuum or something? I shall remove it later after some other jobs and have another go. I am very excited to learning more again and playing with my tools Quote
husoi Posted February 19, 2021 Posted February 19, 2021 @James in Brum You should add some pics as you go along. It will make advice easier to judge what to do next and how Quote

Hi James . Have a look at these four points and see whether there is a corresponding point where you can insert a lever such as a very big screwdriver or a tyre iron . If so , be very gentle . Remember , you are NOT trying to wedge anything between the jointing surfaces , you are just trying to pop the gasket . Once you do get it off , the biggest job is going to be cleaning all traces of gasket off the engine and the new sump without digging into the metal . We'll cross that bridge when you come to it . TimR Posted February 19, 2021 Posted February 19, 2021 If you don't have a rubber mallet a block of wood is a good substitute. Before any levering make 100% that you have all fastners removed otherwise you may damage the mating surfaces/sump/crankcase further . Be advised even you have drained the oil ... It will still be present. 1 Quote

Listen for the sudden change of note when you hit it then move to another lug and repeat . Quote
