Don't forget the scabs

How could we?

After God had finished the rattlesnake, the toad, the vampire, He had some awful substance left with which He made a scab.

A scab is a two-legged animal with a cork-screw soul, a water-logged brain, a combination backbone of jelly and glue.

Where others have hearts, he carries a tumor of rotten principles.

When a scab comes down the street, men turn their backs and angels weep in heaven, and the Devil shuts the gates of Hell to keep him out.

No man has a right to scab so long as there is a pool of water to drown his carcass in, or a rope long enough to hang his body with. Judas Iscariot was a gentleman compared with a scab. For betraying his master, he had character enough to hang himself. A scab has not.

Esau sold his birthright for a mess of pottage. Judas Iscariot sold his Savior for thirty pieces of silver. Benedict Arnold sold his country for a promise of a commission in the British Army. The modern strikebreaker sells his birthright, his country, his wife, his children and his fellow men for an unfulfilled promise from his employer, trust or corporation.

Esau was a traitor to himself: Judas Iscariot was a traitor to his God; Benedict Arnold was a traitor to his country; a strikebreaker is a traitor to his God, his country, his wife, his family and his class.”

I think people have forgotten or never really knew how much violence was involved with the strike.

I lived in and was brought up in a non mining town (last pits had shut in the 70's) but with relations in Castleford who worked in the mines. Most of our school had relatives who worked in the pits.

We never played bulldogs charge. We enacted pickets versus police. Perfectly normal.

Everywhere was awash with the support the NUM stickers and sack the tories etc.

It was a police state in and around west/South Yorkshire and areas further north. This of course never got the publicity.

It suited thatcher that the tory rags only ever portrayed the strike as the miners being a baying mob.

Wheres the Orgreave enquiry???

The battle of Orgreave is a fairly apt name for it.

The police tried to use rioting charges but non stuck because the judiciary didn't belive a word they said.

Some of the footage of that battle is the worst police brutality this country has ever seen.

Yes it is true the numbers were removed.

Yes it is true they were set up.

Yes it is true they weren't all filth.

The truth must come out.

No it just cemented generational hatred of the police/army in many communities.

Don't know about your neck of the woods but where I lived for 30 years in Co. Durham I never noticed any animosity to either the police or the army. My daughter's inlaws still live in Crook and among their number are 3 policemen and 2 soldiers.
