Matt88 Posted February 22, 2022 Posted February 22, 2022 Hi Everyone, I was thinking of going for an old Honda CG 125 as a first bike, I've seen one that's a 1979 tax and MOT exempt model and looks well looked after for £1900, I was initially going to go for a new Chinese retro looking Lexmoto / Bulit bike for the same money but was put off by the EURO 5 regulations and electrical / build quality issues people have talked about, just wondered what everyone thought. RAYK47 Posted February 22, 2022 Posted February 22, 2022 it looks great and for me, will be much cooler to ride than a Chinese bike. My only concern would be reliability, if you are handy with a spanner and feel confident you could deal with it then why not. Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted February 22, 2022 Posted February 22, 2022 Great starter bikes but you're paying for classic status on that, which is fine if you want a classic bike but otherwise I'd look for a more modern and cheaper version. Depends if you want a bike for leisure or something for commuting. The newer ones will have 12v electrics so better lighting etc. You can also go for electronic ignition which saves messing about with points. Quote
KiwiBob Posted February 22, 2022 Posted February 22, 2022 Even though its exempt I would prefer to buy a bike with 11 or 12 months MoT ... As for tax, its only £20 for a year on a 125. You should be able to get a decent 2005/6ish CG or YBR 125 for around the £1200 mark. .. it will have better brakes too. Quote
MikeHorton Posted February 22, 2022 Posted February 22, 2022 Reminds me of the bike I learnt on, a yamaha rxs100 in blue, was a little rocket. Enjoy different bikes are like marmite I'm sure you will have lots of fun looks in great condition. Quote
billy sugger Posted February 22, 2022 Posted February 22, 2022 (edited) I reckon the old models, before the 12bhp law as they have a bit more grunt, are better. It was certainly easier for me to do mod 1and 2 on the cb twin, as I did not need to thrash it to do the speed test. The schools bike I used for the first try at mod 1 struggled to do 45 to 50 on a dual carriageway, and turned out wasn't taxed when the examiner looked it over, so could not use it anyway Edited February 22, 2022 by billy sugger 1 Quote
