Sell as non working or pay to get it back on the road?

Afternoon everyone,

I've got a Honda CBF 600-SA. It's a 11 plate with roughly 6000 miles on the clock. It's been sat in my garage since 2015 and unused. The time has come to sell it on so hopefully someone can get some joy for what it's intended to do.

Very difficult to work out how much the market value for a motorbike is, so now i've got the dilema. Would spending around £500 to get it back up and running with an MOT be worthwhile, or just sell it as it is? The battery is dead, tried to charge it but no joy. The bolts that hold it in have seized, so no joy in being able to replace it for another.

Would still need a fair bit of work to get it back to road standard, so would rather the professionals do it all. It's just whether i'd see any of the £500 to get it all done back when selling.

Try getting a quote from a we buy any bike type site. They will usually offer about 50% of the true private sale value. Low mileage cbr600f are going for about 4k if they are in good condition.

 

Depending on how bad the bike is it could become a money pit if you keep finding faults. But if it.judt needs a battery and come fluids it might be worth the effort

Here's a few pics I just went and took. Seat is off as I tried to charge the battery.

Was running perfectly until I stopped using it in 2015. Sadly the garage I rented back then didn't have the greatest roof, so there are a few spots of rust on some of the parts. Also got the two Honda hard side panniers as well.

Contacted a local motorcycle place and they have given a rough price of £300-£500 to get it back up and ready. He said

The fuel system would need a clean through, battery would need replacing, engine oil & filter, air filter, maybe spark plugs, brakes stripping cleaned, easing & new brake fluid.
It could be anywhere between £300-£500.

Sounds about right from a dealership and in fairness it`s roughly what I had in mind if you were close enough to make it a practical proposition.

I think you should consider giving some of it or even all a go yourself and then move it on if you have to.

The question is how much you think you might get for it as a non- runner compared to the price they are going for at the moment.

 

I suspect you'd need to check the dates on the tyres as chances are they will need replacing as well.

 

You could advertise it as a non- runner and see what interest there is before committing to getting it recommissioned.

Thank you both for your replies. Just difficult to try and work out what the price would be if it was running vs non runner. Not seen many comparable on ebay/auto trader etc due to the low mileage.

Just checked the tyres, front is 0901 and rear is 0805. Hard to believe the front tyre was 10 years old when the bike was first out on the road.

Thank you. Still a bit miffed now that the front tyre was 13 years old when I bought the bike direct from Honda!

 

Does anyone have any kind of indication on what a 2011 CBF600-SA with 6000 miles, top box and side panniers would be worth as a non runner?

Just had a quick trundle through Wemoto as I was there anyway and the easy bits that I suspect you could easily do yourself are.

Plugs 41.52

Air filter 29.52

oil filter 6.24

Sump washer 0.46

oil 44.74

Battery 41.14

If you tackled those yourself it would set you back £163.62

Hopefully reducing your spend with the dealer then factor in tyres as @Mississippi Bullfroghas said and £30 for an MOT and then look at what it`s worth.

If you're thinking of selling as a project it helps to know that it runs. Put some fresh fuel in it, use jump leads to connect car battery (not with the car engine running, the alternator output is too much for a bike) and make sure the engine at least turns over and there is oil pressure.

 

With that information you'll get a better price. 

 

Looking at prices on Auto trader and the work needed, bearing in mind photos always make it look better than it is and it looks like it needs new handlebars, I suspect you could ask £1500 for it as running but needing recommissioning. Prices of projects are quite high at the moment. 

 

Go above that with ONO and see what interest there is.

What would you want for the panniers and pannier racking? I've been thinking of getting some for mine. 

On the battery bolt cover it with penetrating oil and let it soak in.

The injectors can be cleaned with redex

Hi @DaveUK, If the fuel has been in there for 7 years, I would seriously drain it out, and remove the fuel pump from inside the Fuel tank, done a few Honda's where there's a rubber housing around the back of pump, Holding the gauze that acts as part of filter, this in turn rot's with the old fuel, and if you try to start with fresh fuel, it get's inside Injectors and clog's them up, and once on a Honda Blackbird also took out the Fuel regulator as well.

And that's when cost start to go up!!!!

Not saying yours will be but I would check, before putting new fuel inside tank.

I can see where you're coming from with regards cost of recommissioning against what you would get selling as a "project" bike. I bought a 1994 BMW K1100LT of that well know auction site. The bike had been stored for the best part of 10 years when it went up for sale. After sending the seller a couple of questions regarding condition etc I put in a "daft" bid and hey ho come then auction end it was mine for the princely sum of £400, that added to the transport costs from London to Yorkshire put the total cost at £550 for a 1 owner BMW that had only done 60,000 from new complete with the full BMW service history it seemed a bargain. First job was to drain all the fluids out and replace along with new spark plugs and fuel filter. Put in new fuel coupled up the new battery, and after watching a video on YT by Chris Harris who specialises in older K bikes and other older BM's. In this video he put 10cc of engine oil into each cylinder refit spark plugs and hit the started button and hey presto fired into life. She smoked a bit until the oil had burnt off in the cylinders after this she ran like a dream.

Yes it needed the brakes sorting, discs, master cylinders and calipers etc. I went down the road of a "donor" bike for these parts again bought off e**y. This bike had 6months MOT so I rode it until MOT expired and the stripped off all the parts I needed plus a few extras that weren't on the "project" bike. The total value as per Motorworks website for the parts I was fitting came to just over £900, given I had paid for both bikes £950 even the wife seemed pleased with the costs. This whole project took me from date of purchase to passing the MOT, with no advisories, exactly 3yrs. 

Yes I bought this as a true project and it took time but it's all been worth it in the end. After a few ride outs in the UK to give it a good old shake down to find any issues, of which nothing major appeared, given it's a 28yr old bike that had been stood nearly half it's life and no major problems rearing up it worked out rather well. Then the "big" trip came along, the ride over to Tunisia, via France and into Italy for the ferry across to Tunisia. A total of around 1500 miles in 3 days, all on French and Italian motorways with speeds averaging 75-80 mph with stops only for fuel and short breaks for drinks etc she did it without missing a beat. There was more chance of me and the wife breaking down before the bike. It's been over here now for nearly 12 months and has been back over to Italy for a 12 day trip up to Rimini and down the Adriatic coast then across to Pompei and the Amalfi Coast before riding down the Med coast and onto Sicily before returning home to Hammamet, again another trip of in excess of 2000 miles, two up & fully loaded without missing a beat.

So in answer to do you keep or do you sell personally speaking I'd try and keep it and get some fun and enjoyment from it knowing that you had done all the work and reaping the fruits of your labours  by riding it.
