Are there any regulations for the placing of these?

Road side signs have to be of certain construction.

These things remind me of something I was once told of your going to hit something don’t hit a tree they don’t give…

Round here they are being liberally painted on verges typically on the outside of bends.  Get it wrong or greeted by the inappropriate over take you have no where to go…

Judging by the state of the ground near them they have been planted to stop parking on the verges

These are borrowed images, they are used for that and reducing the size of car park entrance.

They just seem to be spray painted at any excuse..

I wonder what will be the result of a rider's leg hitting that at 50mph.

Really everything should look like this

If you hit one you are probably will be buggered. Same as a lamppost, telegraph pole, tree, vehicles, rocks, walls, fences or any other of the endless hard structures that line roads.

No I agree, however there should be consideration before placing them.

Reducing road markings then lining unlit roads with unlit spikes with no reflectors, is a recipie for trouble... Particularly on roads with large unlit animals grazing on.

As someone who commutes by bike across the forest at all times of day and year the increasing numbers of them often with little point is alarming.
