Its like the old days.

I remember going to a Triumph dealership sometime in the late 1990s and on a shelf was a sorry looking line up of gear boxes all with holes in approximately the same place.

Taken a chunk out of my brand new boots too. Fortunately no real injuries.

I presume the bloody great bang was followed by a whirring and clattering noise as you slowed to a stop ?

Any diagnosis of the cause yet? I take it you weren`t rock jumping off road by the background.

Cheers

Pretty much as you describe it. Gave it the beans coming off a roundabout and it went at about 60mph. Looking back I think there had been a bit of a judder under power the last couple of times I rode it. Think it must have been the pivot point wearing through.

Anyone know the trick to getting the shaft out of the rear drive unit?

Shafts normally just pull off! unless you have had water ingress and its seized to the rear drive which can be a common problem on some bikes of similar style

You have done a proper bloody job of that :?

Thanks,

Yes, it just needed a bit of persuasion. The trick was getting hold of it. With the help of a hastily built jig and a tap spanner it came out OK.

Looks like there's a bit of a washer in the end of the shaft. Noticed that on the technical drawing for the replacement that hasn't arrived yet. Not sure quite what the point is of that or how the new one will go back in.

Could have been worse, hows the boot.

Yes, could have been the fast lane of the M6! The boot will live to fight another day.

The washer is actually a spring clip which is the reason why you couldn't get it off

On some bikes they are on the front and the rear slides on the shaft

Lots of driveshafts have snap rings, it never occurred to me that's what the washer reference was 😂

With regards to re-assembly.. Does the snap ring go around the splines first before tapping into place, or should I be taking it off the shaft and placing it in the groove within the diff, then tapping the shaft down? Have been wrestling with option 1 for a bit but don't want to give it too much welly and screw it up.

Came out on shaft I would put it back in on shaft.

Success! 😁❤️

Got the whole thing bolted down to the jig, braced both ends with it slightly high in the middle, and pushed downwards.

Thanks again everyone. Just done a test ride and everything works as expected. Shudder to think what Triumph would have charged me.
