Simon Davey Posted February 19 Posted February 19 Switching comm's over to my new helmet last night, and realised after 3000 miles, that it was a bit grubby. A bit nervous about just popping the liner in the washing machine though. Quote
RideWithStyles Posted February 19 Posted February 19 Some helmets are designed to make it easier to remove and wash than others shoei are very good, hjc are ok to name a few. some have to be done while in but to me it’s a risk to the delicate inner helmet . some just not to . if removable id just hand wash them with hand soap, rinse well. Pat dry excess water and leave in its natural position in a warm place but not directly on a radiator or place it on a thick towel. If not there is some decent helmet foam cleaners about, muc off (I think) isn’t bad stuff, the smell isn’t terrible but there is something about it that just doesn’t get 5stars. There was German brand one (moly I’m sure or Wurths?) that was a really good at cleaning, but holy it needed a day or two to really air off. 1 Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted February 19 Posted February 19 I've washed mine but generally I wear something to keep my hair out of contact with the liner. It simply keeps the liner cleaner for longer. What I wear depends on the weather. In the summer a thin buff, in the winter a thermal balaclaver. 1 Quote
Fiddlesticks Posted February 19 Posted February 19 I always wear a thin skull cap / running cap under my helmet. That gets washed and the inside of the helmet gets sprayed with antibac. Still smells OK, so haven't felt the need to pull it to bits to wash it yet. 1 Quote
Mickly Posted February 19 Posted February 19 I occasionally remove the liner and wash with cheapo baby shampoo. 1 1 Quote
husoi Posted February 19 Posted February 19 If washing it then you should apply some scotch guard to keep it clean for longer. Similar to what you would do with a fabric sofa 1 Quote
JRH Posted February 19 Posted February 19 Like @Mississippi BullfrogI always wear a balaclava so no direct contact with the liner. 1 Quote
Simon Davey Posted February 19 Author Posted February 19 Many thanks good people. Looks like a hand wash is in order, and possibly in baby shampoo. Then, I'll probably sell that sweet smelling shiny helmet. 1 Quote

So you’ll have that faint masking smell/odour, after the baby has been washed from sick and other bodily soiling, you know that something has gone on with it but not quite sure which before hand.. but then again it might be smell of the lady magnet? Or the urge to change you? lol. Edited February 19 by RideWithStyles 1 Quote

Stu Posted February 19 Posted February 19 I once washed a helmet liner in one of my Arai's and for whatever reason it took days to dry and was worse than before it went it! It was really fusty and no matter how many times I washed it it just stunk! So I binned it and bought a new lid 2 Quote

Stu Posted February 19 Posted February 19 Just now, Simon Davey said: This might be where a hand wash would be suitable. it was a hand wash and I think that was the issue! No spin cycle to get all the water out and took too long to dry 1 Quote

Fiddlesticks Posted February 19 Posted February 19 O/T but I once used the steam cleaner on my gloves. It killed the bacteria and got them nice and clean, but on the down side the filling went all crispy. 1 Quote
V650 Posted February 19 Posted February 19 I too would wash the liner regularly Mostly in the sink with some washing powder / liquid Then Rinse well in cold water and hang outside on the line to dry When dry enough bring back inside and leave for a few days before reinstalling in the helmet I appreciate that for some this may be their only helmet and cant wait a few days for it to dry I now have 3 helmets so giving it some time to dry is not an issue for me 1 Quote

Most parents I know are always moaning about the cost of babies ! You could maybe classify them as cheap if you forgo sending them to Eton, but what responsible parent would do a thing like that ? 2 Quote
Fleck Posted February 20 Posted February 20 I wear a balaclava so the helmet stays clean, bit warmer too 2 Quote

Same sort of thing for leathers I always wear long johns under the trousers. 3 Quote
S-Westerly Posted February 22 Posted February 22 I wash the liner occasionally and have an alternative helmet if needed. Usually though I use a MucOff foam type cleaner which does a good job of deodoriser it. In winter I wear a thin balaclava but nothing in the summer. That said I've virtually no hair and what I have gets washed daily. 1 Quote
