Driving video comments

I would be interested in what others on here might think of this video online. I’ve watched a few of this guys videos before. I’ve always agreed with his point of view.  On this one not so much.  I do get it that he is an Advanced Driving Instructor I believe. So should know what he is doing.  All the comments on YouTube agree with him.  Maybe he is right?  Quite possibly. If you can be bothered then I would be interested in what others think.   I know the folk on this forum are sensible and able motorists. 

 

In the clip he is positioned in a central lane which merges with the outside lane. I’m saying that he pulled over in an entitled way without indicating and no clear space to move into. Be interested what others think. 
 

I’m not condoning the other motorists reaction by the way.

I didn't listen to his comments but I think he was in the right. At 3.15 you can see that it is the outside lane that ends, and the other car was showing in his rear view camera so clearly wasn't in front of him.

Yeah 1.15 I think … I can see that. Still very close to the silver car. I tend to drive a lot more defensively … as I said in first post I may be wrong.

He was technically right but for an advanced driver he seemed awful surprised it happened. It was clear the outside lane closed so they should be merging into his lane. The other driver did not get ahead of him and was never in front of him. Plus if you go for a typical zipper style merging she would be behind him anyway. So yes she had the duty to manage her merge but I think it was foreseeable from his point of view.

He was 100% correct. 

She was in the lane that was merging, she should have given herself space to move into position, she didn't, she tried to push in. 

He should be sending that video in, to complain about her road rage. 

Well done him for not responding and staying calm.

I’ve watched this video quite a few times now. Just watched it again lol … I do agree that he is technically correct. However the way I operate is to not automatically expect other drivers to do the right thing … so what would I have done?  
 

I would have been very conscious of the silver car being very close and not looking as if it would back off. I would have given a couple of flashes of right hand indicator. And if the silver car didn’t back off then I would have slowed. Let it past and settled behind the silver car.

I would love to have your good reasoning and patience. 

Whilst I don't try to engage to cause an issue, if I can do safely,  I'm not one for allowing other driver's arrogance to get one over on me.

As I see it the outside lane merges with the middle lane rather than vice versa. Those are always points we're unskilled drivers get themselves into problems and having watched many of Ashley's videos I'd be surprised if he hadn't anticipated the reaction. Hence he was clearly assertive when pulling away to give clear indication of a merge in turn scenario.  

 

Unfortunately madam was unable to understand how the merge works.

I appreciate others point of view on this. I guess Ashley posts these videos to make people think. 
 

I completely get that he was technically correct. The silver car definitely wasn’t in front.  Nor was it alongside. But it was extremely close and she wasn’t backing off. 
 

I still think that instead of insisting on my priority, that I would have backed off myself and let the silver car pass. That is assuming that the silver car showed no indication of allowing a reasonable space. 
 

It is interesting that I seem to be completely alone in my opinion on this. That probably implies that I am wrong lol. 
 

It was drummed in to me almost 50 years ago now, when I learnt to drive, to always drive defensively. And that’s what I believe I’m describing here as to how I would react.

Silver car speed and distance was quite erratic running up to that point*.
For starters there is a sign post new and visible, Lane three is closing! (the silver car was in), white painted ground has faded for three to merge to no2 but says the same.

If the driver was looking further than messing with something inside the car*, would have notices the cars ahead managed to merge without incident as to a clue, if they didn’t know the area.

At no point near or at the merger was the silver car ahead or inline….i suspect was distracted by something again and got surprised hence the very late brake and swerving to the bank and then a quarter to the other side afterwards.

 

Silver car driver was in the wrong and needed to insure a clean merge, plain and simple. our driver is not required to give way to the silver car, only to maintain distance, speed and lane discipline.

 

admittedly it’s a bit poor layout of roadway and marking.

 

part of the problem comes with advanced driving etc is that your expected to do the correct thing even if it goes against the masses.

if he didn’t do that and a accident happened what will be said? Did you do as trained and learned? did you go below the expectations/standards for your level? And why did you change it? Just for the other driver? Why should you do that? Should you not expect that? That double edge one is terrible.

To me it’s not difficult to just assume all the time the next driver I see is a complete nobber but other people find to harder to predict the worst manoeuvre.
Where as if the silver driver has no higher level/standards it’s pretty hard not to go below the expectation of a basic level of driving.

There's a section of M5 south of the Gordano Services junction where 4 lanes merge into 3 just at the brow of a long uphill straight. Virtually every month there's a shunt there, often at high speed when someone goes hooning up the hill, ignores all the signs warning that the outer lane has to merge and finds themselves straight into the back end of slower moving traffic with nowhere to go.

There was a drive to develop the situation not to disapate with it.

 

Certainly round the local cities here her behaviour is normal, leave half a car length infront of you and some one will try and use it. 

 

Good driving practice no, normal driving practice yes.

 

Always something to be careful of on 2 wheels as the gap they are shooting for may contain you.

 

Personally I wouldn't of open the window.

Update to add, watched a couple of videos. He’s a really irritating guy with his know all attitude. You can be as advanced as you like but sometimes you have to accept when in Rome…

Ashley on his bike was akin to watching paint dry. He only rides in the city and doesn't make progress or filter etc

I stopped watching after seeing his riding
