  1. Dunno mate....but it could be a valve clearance service....which normally works out pretty expensive. Is it injected? If so it can be a good idea to put it in to a genuine Honda service centre to make sure the ECU maps are kept up to date. Other than that the rest is fairly simple.....
  2. A mate of mine had one back in the early '80's. I used to ride it quite a bit.....but obviously it's hard to write an objective review 30 years later....and with the rose tinted specs on.... Was a nice bike to ride....and sounded great.....but my XS1100 I had at the time had more torque.....so didn't need so much work on the gear lever. Obviously brakes and handling were no match for modern machines.....but it did turn heads....and had a good riding position. These bikes can fetch serious money these days.....which is doubly annoying because he virtually gave the thing away....
  3. From what I hear of the End of Season meet we may want to break the group up into several smaller groups if enough people are coming on this. And maybe split it into groups for Faster riders and Slower Riders....just so that the guys who want to go a bit quicker don't feel held back by slower riders and slower riders don't feel that they are being pressured to keep up and ride beyond their comfort zone. This is in no way encouraging riders to break any speed limits.....but enables those who would prefer to bimble along and enjoy the scenery to not feel pressured to ride beyond their limits.....and those that want to get there quicker so's they can get the teas in are not held back..... Put your name to whatever group you would feel most comfortable in: Faster Group. Slower Group. Tango BonnieBird
  4. Nice one Stu........does your bike have a hydraulic clutch or cable? I saw somewhere a hydraulic upgrade kit for cable operated clutches....think it was an ad in Classic Motorcycle Mechanics.....
  5. Pull the spark plugs out and see if any of them are oily. If any are oily then you need to look at the cylinder that it came from......could be valve seals, piston rings, head gasket, etc. If none of them are oily....then stick a new set of plugs in, check/replace the airfilter, make sure the airbox inlets are clear and then see how it goes.....
  6. TC is organizing a run down (up) to Rutland Water on the 8th April.....so it would be nice to go up and meet him and any others that fancy heading there. So if anyone from this region is up for it lets set off from Hartford Marina (and get the Tag if you don't already have it) at 10:00. I'm guessing we'll go up the old A1 to Stilton....but I'm a bit sketchy on the route from there....so anyone who knows a good route and can get Google maps to do what they want could post it in this thread. Anyone who's interested in the run post your names in the thread: Cheers. Tango BonnieBird
  7. Meet at Hartford Marina (PE28 2AA) at say 10:00.....then head off to wherever people want depending on which tags they need or what takes their fancy. Give us a text Neil if you are up for it...or prefer to get out a bit earlier/later......
  8. Sounds like a cunning plan Alan...... Hope you don't find any nasties when you drop the sump..... I fancy a cafe racer project myself....but don't have the time or resources.....but I can dream....at least that don't cost...... Good luck with it mate.....put pictures up as you go along.......
  9. Hmmmm.....wasn't thinking of heading that far on Sunday Rushwind....... I'm thinking that we'll probably head to Wales for a Weekend if things permit when the weather warms up a bit. I was thinking more of around this area.......Cambs, Beds, Northants borders.....maybe even over to Snetterton if the weather is going to be OK. I've got my pub tags....but I don't mind riding out with others if they need to get theirs......
  10. You've got oil in it? Is the fuel tap operated by vacuum from the manifold? Does it have a "Prime" position? If so, switch it to that and try again....but only for a short while as you could flood the carb. Is the plug OK? What colour is it? Should be a light brown colour......white = Too lean...too much air/not enough fuel.......Black = Too rich.....not enough air/too much fuel. Check for any loose connections around the bike......battery terminals, earth connections etc. Does it have a cutout switch on the stand? could this be faulty causing the bike to cut out? I saw that there is a helpline number on the thing that BonnieBird posted.....maybe give that a call to see if they can give you some ideas. Unfortunately diagnosing problems over a forum can sometimes be difficult.....so all we can do is give you some hints on what could possibly be the cause..... Good Luck
  11. But if you're going to make savings.....maybe do it with something other than your brakes eh mate.....
  12. Brake fluid is Hygroscopic....it absorbs moisture.....so it may have absorbed some moisture over that time. For the sake of a couple of quid I'd probably just get some fresh stuff....
  13. Unfortunately BonnieBird is on Uni patrol again.......but I'm up for a run if the forecast stays OK. If anyone needs to get their Pub Tags....or any other tags...we could sort something out? Let me know who, what, where, etc......otherwise I'll just play Billy-no-mates and go for a run on me jack......
  14. We're probably going via Rayleigh to join up with Mandy's Brother......then run in to Sarfend via the back roads. We'll arrange a rendezvous point a bit nearer the time with anyone else that can make it Alan......either enroute or at the "sea"front mate........
  15. yeah....very good Alan.... Anyhoo....what's the plan for the bike then mate? Straight restoration.....or something a bit radical?

  17. We were talking to the guy who ran our local bike shop some time ago, and he was commenting on the fact that the largest current group of riders are in our age group. So I said that he should start selling cruisers specifically as all us old b*ggers are now getting to the age where we'll have to start looking at cruisers coz our knees are shot!...... He didn't take my advice....and has now shut down.....
  18. AAAARRRRRGGGHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOO Mega.......don't turn to the dark side.......Cruiser today......leather chaps tomorrow......Blue Oyster Bar on Fridays.......
  19. Just be aware of what can happen if your bike is laid up for a while: http://www.themotorbikeforum.co.uk/view ... hilit=nest This was from before I owned the bike as I've run it pretty much consistently since getting it......but strange things can happen.....
  20. Is the air filter OK? is there anything that could be restricting the air passage into the airbox?
  21. Is this bike likely to be Fuel Injected? If so it could be the fuel pump.
  22. Tank breather may be blocked....try running it with the filler cap open to see if this helps.....

    Please help!

Well....the DT is road legal and the KX isn't....so that should narrow your choice a bit..... Insurance you will have to research yourself coz it depends on so many things (where you live, will the bike be garaged overnight, will you be using it for commuting, etc). Crash Helmet....always buy new and try on as many as you can to find one that fits you. As for gear......the sky is the limit really. Decent Textile jacket and trousers can set you back £50 - £1000.....but if you are on a tight budget have a look around for 2nd hand stuff. Bike boots....again they vary a lot in price....and you can look for 2nd hand again if funds are tight. Leather gloves are best....and you need to decide if you want them to be waterproof or not.....and the price will vary depending on this....and again look for 2nd hand if you need to. Not very specific....but have a look on eBay or other sites to get an idea of the price of gear..... Good Luck....
  24. Nice one Roy.....you'll be out there later washing and drying it down then?......
