elizabethf Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 Hello! Here's a conundrum. A work colleague has just asked me if there's anyone out there who will insure an 80 year old on his scooter? He rides every day and has done for many years, he had a Honda 75. This was stolen the other day, but he does have another scooter he can use - a Honda 90. However he needs to get it insured first. His old insurer no longer insures bikes. They were recommended Carole Nash but they don't insure 80 year olds, neither do many on comparison sites. I've given him a list of bike insurers that don't tend to appear on comparison sites like Bennetts and Wicked.... but Im sure there MUST be someone out there insuring much older riders!!! Other than him walking into a brokers. Please HALP. Quote
fastbob Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 It may be useful for him to contact Age Concern . Quote
elizabethf Posted March 27, 2019 Author Posted March 27, 2019 They have done that as his old insurer recommended that, spent half an hour on the phone and they couldn't find anyone, and the recommended he call his old insurer! lol. Quote
elizabethf Posted March 27, 2019 Author Posted March 27, 2019 Oh he also doesn't have a car so it's his main way of getting out and about. Quote
raesewell Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 He needs to get the insurance agent to speak directly to the underwriter, anything and anyone can be insured, at a price! Quote

Arwen Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 If you phone up the insurance companies I dare say they will give a quote. Many things are simply marked as "nope!" on comparison websites. Quote

I was going to mention Bikesure as well. I've been with them for a number of years, I'd be surprised if he was turned down by them. Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 If you phone up the insurance companies I dare say they will give a quote. Many things are simply marked as "nope!" on comparison websites. My parents are in their 80s and most insurers won't offer them motor cover. They've always phoned direct as they don't use comparison sites. I think a lot of insurers won't provide cover for older folks. Quote
Fleck Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 Is that ageism? Wow didn't think we did isms any more. Quote
Guest Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 Other than him walking into a brokers...............and what'a wrong with using a brokers? Let THEIR fingers do the walking..........seriously, I know of several people who were getting nowhere with the price comparison sites but then got sorted out by a broker - a couple at a substantial saving. Plus the brokers will have a degree of specialist/local knowledge that always comes in handy......good luck. I'm sure something will turn up. Quote
elizabethf Posted March 27, 2019 Author Posted March 27, 2019 Is that ageism? Wow didn't think we did isms any more. It seems so! Once you hit 80 people dont want to insure you.Its the same with per insurance though once your pet hits senior, suddenly your cover isn't as expansive (unless you opt for lifetime and the likes). Possibly the same with old (but not old enough to be a classic) vehicles too. Quote
Arwen Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 They can blanket ban people of a certain age from insurance packages. However they must be able to justify it. If this guy has never had an accident, then it might be worth challenging their justification. https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/discrimination-in-the-provision-of-goods-and-services/discrimination-in-the-provision-of-goods-and-services1/goods-and-services-what-are-the-different-types-of-discrimination/what-doesn-t-count-as-unlawful-discrimination-in-goods-and-services/age-discrimination-when-discrimination-is-allowed-in-the-provision-of-goods-or-services/ Quote
dynax Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 I got a quote from Bikesure, really helpful and got a great deal, almost a quarter of what i got quoted from Carole Nash, almost exactly the same cover and extras too, no brainer who i will go with Quote
elizabethf Posted March 28, 2019 Author Posted March 28, 2019 They can blanket ban people of a certain age from insurance packages. I mean, let's be honest how many elderly car drivers put the wind up you (on or off bike) for doing something silly? Or you've witnessed doing something silly? Or, looking at my local paper, the amount of fatals or serious collisions involvoeing 75+ is pretty high. Higher than any under 25s, who are also discriminated against. Quote
Arwen Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 I've given you an option to get him insured. It is your choice if you want to pass it on.There are awful drivers in every age range. Quote
Slowlycatchymonkey Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 This article names a few-https://www.confused.com/motorbike-insurance/guides/how-older-bikers-can-keep-insurance-premiums-down#Agree awful at any age. Although young unmarried men are according to insurance companies the worse Quote
