The books by Sam manicom are really good. Basic premise is he fancies an adventure so gets a bike licence and 3 months later sets off to south Africa.

There are 4 books in the series as he ends up travelling the world over 8 years.

I had a subscription to MSL until this month (Christmas presents). His column was one of the go to features in there. Great suggestion. Thanks.

Finished ‘Uneasy Rider’ by Mike Carter. I can’t make up my mind whether it was worth reading. It’s definitely more about his woes, his divorce and midlife crisis than it is about motorcycle travel and while I started off liking him and finding it funny in places by the end of the book I didn’t much. Won’t go into details because it might spoil it for others and it did make me laugh out loud in places which is no mean feat on dull winter days, just don’t expect the usual travel book.

Whatever your opinion , this is still the definitive work on the subject .

I’ve got that, not the same cover though, found it in a second hand book shop in Glastonbury.

Did you rate it?

Yep, even better read in a mild haze of herbal goodness 😉

Mind you I lent it to a mate who wasn’t impressed.

I originally read a borrowed copy as a wide eyed lad & thought it was the bollox, now with a more cynical mind I’m not sure Hunter S Thompson is all he’s made up to be.

Not sure if that’s a recommendation or not.

Or did you mean the bookshop ? 😆

😂

You gotta allow a certain amount of licence for things written in a different era. It’s still available as an ebook so I might give it a whirl after I’ve finished ‘Our Ridiculous World Trip, Around the world on a scooter with a sidecar’ which so far is two clueless, hapless blokes who it seems stumbled into it by mistake (which they obviously aren’t because it takes a lot of effort n guts to quit your job, find the money and make it happen. So far so enjoyable.

There are many different covers to this book but I deemed this one to more appropriate than certain others . 😉

I have very similar feelings . As I have become older and wiser I have come to regard HST as more of a nob . I think he has become a bit of a  poster boy for those who didn't actually indulge .

I’m assuming you still reckon the books worth a read though?

HST was a bit of a contradiction in terms by modern standards at least. Was well to the left in politics yet a fanatic about guns and a member of the NRA. Shot himself through the head at 67 and had his ashes shot out of a cannon. He was a difficult man to pigeon hole and in these days of identity politics pretty unidentifiable!

Yup. She’s nearly as nutty as her other half. In a good way, that is.

Note to self. Must watch Mondo Sahara again.

Austin Vince did an excellent two part talk on taking travel video at the weekend. It really stood out that he used to be a teacher, it was all broken down into the most important points presented in an easily digested way. Tbh he made some of the other presentations in the line up seem rather feeble! Chatted to him on a couple of occasions, he an odd one for sure!

I enjoyed Lois on the Loose. Ended up at some Persian evening in Bristol (where I discovered I’m not a fan of Iranian food 🤮) and she was giving a talk so had a chat n bought her Iranian book. She is VERY enthusiastic about Iran. I didn’t enjoy the book so much but probably because any country that takes a deliberate large step backwards in equality is never gonna do it for me. Iranian women have to cover themselves with baggy clothing (including hair) only showing hands n face, mustn’t enter a tea house on their own and when they do they sit in a separated area, they have to sit in a particular area on the bus, and women aren’t allowed to sing in public unless it’s a female audience - all things that amount to unnecessary control.. blurgh.
