where i did the damage... top step was too much.

I’ll show photos later of what I did :-).

will get on with it soon. Hoping it stays dry. Need to wait for Halfords to open. I need oil, some of those thinners mentioned and scotch pads. Are they like sandpaper or scouring pads? Or neither?

I don't know whether Halfords do them . I get mine from Toolstation . They call them Contour Sanding Pads and they come in a pack of three grades . They resemble Scouring pads but don't use them in the kitchen or you will have no pattern left on your best dinner service .

Exhaust gaskets. Any tips. I’m on my own so trying to pull leaver the exhaust into place to the nuts onto studs to hold in place. The copper gaskets keeps falling down and out.

What about glueing in place with PVA? Would burn off when engine running?

PVA will take a while to dry. I would go for super glue instead as it dries in secs.

Hot temp silicone, you can get a small tube cheap and just smear a bit on th back of the washer or gasket to hold it in place while you do the fixing.

Exhaust gasket ... Grease . Big dollop holds and then melts

Glues can create high points on surfaces and depending on the glue it may attack the mating surfaces

Remember when I told you to glue them in with Silicone Sealant earlier in this thread and someone said it would affect the sensors that you haven't got ?

Ah yes, funnily it was that that gave me The idea I think @fastbob. I think I thought you meant the paper sump gasket.
have gone for Vaseline because I had some. Going to have lunch in a few minutes then try to get it into place and done up. Then it’s oil cooler then it is radiator and then it is fill with oil. Thanks all for helping have the confidence to have a go :-)

That was me - just worth saying that silicone on exhausts is fine on older bikes without sensors but don't use it on those with them. I've seen plenty of old skool guys tell lads with modern cars to use silicone on exhausts and next day they're back with O2 sensor issues.

How hard should this be? I am finding it hard to get even a couple of turns on the nuts onto the studs. If it just is a pain in the arse fine I will soldier on and do it but by bit. If it is not supposed to be that hard could I have it wrong? I am wondering if the exhaust is bent from the impact. Can I do harm?

Looks as it should . The gaskets don't sit in a recess ( Surprisingly ) you do have to crush them though . What's the torque setting ?

Ah. Have undone everything. Whatever way my instinct is it was not sitting right. It is hard to manoeuvre the exhaust into place on my own. It’s raining now. I have glooped the copper rings to the exhaust manifold (the come out the engine hole) and covered the bike. I will go have a cuppa and a think and see what the weather does.

Just to be sure, have you removed the old gaskets? I always forget because they're usually camouflaged in black soot.

I definitely had the old gaskets. The all fell off.
I fitted the gaskets to the head with gloop. I will take the slip ons off and try again perhaps with help.
will post back when I have more to report.

I suspect it's a case of getting everything lined up which is hard when you're doing it single handed and the weight of the system is working against you. I usually use a small scissor jack to support the weight so I'm not fighting both the lining up and the weight issue. My experience is that I often need to try numerous times to get things to line up, then try tightening the nuts. If you try to use the nuts to pull it into place it nearly always ends up misaligned.

On the plus side the inside of your engine looks nice and clean. No staining or sludge. It must have got regular oil changes throughout it's life. If I'm trying to get an exhaust on I sit on the ground and put my foot under the end where it joins to the link pipe and then wiggle the headers in while moving my foot.

Looks slightly at an angle, could be just the pic, looks like top needs in a touch ie whole thing anti clockwise looking at pic, dosen't look like your near crushing the copper seals

I had to double check , but to my great surprise the gaskets on this bike don't sit  in a recess . So , as James says , they would just fall off . Unusual .
