I'm looking at a new jacket, commuting has made my current one look a bit grim, as it had hi Vis on the sleeves, now begrimed and not coming clean. Anyway, looked at an Alpine stars and a Held, both come minus the back protector. Seems like we're being asked to pay twice. Or is there a valid reason I'm missing?

I think your right, just stretching what they can get out of you.

Have you looked at knox layer approach

Check the quality of back protector that comes with the jacket as well many are not that great...

Im not put off a jacket that comes without armour because I prefer to buy armour that is a close fit (which should in turn perform better in the event it’s needed).

The Knox armour is very good and it comes in so many sizes you can get a good fit for pretty much any size armour pocket eg their back armour comes in 6 different sizes.

I’ve switched the supplied armour over to Knox in three jackets because it’s simply much better.
A lot of people don’t use the back protector because it’s uncomfortable. Even though it’s sensible I don’t like them.

Ive never bought a jacket that had more than a simple foam back protector.. and its hardly that. I guess it makes sense to allow the buyer to decide what he/she wants and leave it to them. side effect being the jacket will at least appear to be competitively priced. Even Rukka do the same for all but the flagship jackets. And.. what if the supplied B-P doesn't work for you?

But conversely they supply shoulder and elbow protectors in every jacket?

And they have a "recommended", i.e. one that fits, back protector, why not just supply it? Particularly given 95% of people who buy the jacket go on to buy the "recommended" back protector...

With a removeable back protector you only really need 1 or 2 to swap between your jackets if they take a different shape, the advantage is that you can buy a quality protector once :thumb:

I like the Ghost D30 armour and now have a full set which I can swap around between various bits of kit as needed. I don't actually like back armour that much although usually wear it. So far it's been the only bit of armour I've owned that's failed in use (not during an off either) although it was RST own brand stuff so probably not the best.

I've use a separate back protector: that way I only need one, and it works with every jacket.
