Magpie84 Posted April 30, 2021 Posted April 30, 2021 So back in August I bought myself a triumph tiger 800. The previous owner had been using it to commute from Guildford to Yeovil so it had quite square tyres. Thanks to lockdown and changing jobs I've hardly ridden. With the temperatures warming up I'm hoping to start riding some more. My question is, is it possible to round the tyres off again with riding or should I look into getting a new tyre? It still have loads of tread so I'm hoping it's just a case of riding more. Thanks in advance Magpie Quote
Ian Frog Posted April 30, 2021 Posted April 30, 2021 Personal opinion only here ! Don`t bother, the first time you encounter a bend in less than beautiful dry conditions you will regret it. Get rid of the squared off rear at the least. Why not keep it for RWYB drag racing on your other bike? As I said purely my take on it. Cheers Ian 1 1 Quote

Thanks in advance Magpie If you have a very twisty road with a nice abrasive surface you could slowly re shape them by riding up and down it an awful lot, front brake and a couple of sideways burnouts will help the rear. I would just buy a couple of nice tyres and be done. 1 Quote
fullscreenaging Posted April 30, 2021 Posted April 30, 2021 Tyres will always square off with road riding because it is in the upright position 95% of the time. The only thing with a square tyre is that it’s a bit harder to get onto the side of the tyre, but as the tyre wears out over time you don’t really notice it. You only notice when you put new tyres on that have a nice round profile and the bike just changes direction easier than you remember. I would take the rear down to 2mm in the center (legal being 1mm) and then change it. 1 1 Quote

This is true And depending on the tyres making them less square can be done! I had some that was pretty bad but took the bike on a fair few rides on a twisty road and the did become better but usually the damage is already done If you're worried about them then replace them as it will always be in the back of your mind 1 1 Quote

Magpie84 Posted April 30, 2021 Author Posted April 30, 2021 Ok so new rear tyre added to my shopping list as well as a new exhaust as I'm jealous of @SometimesSansEnginenew one 2 Quote

I'm sure loads of people who would love to have a wife who would appreciate a new rear tyre as a thoughtful present 1 Quote

rennie Posted May 1, 2021 Posted May 1, 2021 I wouldn't change tyres with life in just because they were squared off! (couldn't afford to) you can ride around the problem if you're careful Quote
S-Westerly Posted May 1, 2021 Posted May 1, 2021 A Tiger is similar to my multistrada in that they aren't really bikes you hoon round corners getting your knee down and scraping pegs although I'm sure you could. As such slightly squared tyres aren't the end of all things. I will say though that when you do change squared off tyres it is amazing how the bike seems to come alive so...... Quote
