ChrisBiggsUK Posted November 8, 2024 Posted November 8, 2024 It was daunting leaving my bike parked up in a car park for the first time yesterday. I half expected to get back to it and find similar happening. And the outcome would have been similar too. I'll use force to defend my Son, my Wife and now my bike. Currently in that order, but things may change over time. 2 6 Quote

V650 Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 RTE ( Government Propaganda Broadcaster ) did a programme about the bike theft epidemic This is not just a Dublin problem its all over the country Seen a little scrote doing wheelies up and down the main street in Bray in the middle of the day a week before Christmas If any of you guys / girls were even thinking of coming to Ireland on your bikes I would seriously reconsider this place has turned in to a lawless kip 1 1 Quote
bonio Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 I'm sure it's not as bad as over here, mate. There are loads of bike thefts being reported even here out in the sticks. 1 Quote
V650 Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 At least your guys (police ) can run the little feckers off the road Where here they just sit back and watch & this just encourages them 1 Quote
bonio Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 Ours can chase along as there's no risk of an accident. In practice, that means they do nothing. In London, pickpocketing and phone snatching are the latest thing. It's becoming like Rome or Barcelona. When my bike was nicked out of a hotel car park a few years ago, I phoned the police to say what had happened, and two hours later, I got an email saying the case had been closed. The car park had cctv but they were only interested in producing the required paperwork. I'm not having go at coppers, but Chief Constables and Home Office ministers need to revise their policing priorities. 4 Quote

RideWithStyles Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 Still tax payers money (not directly from the fine money) goes to pay for the vans, wraps, cameras, operatives (employees and equipment indirectly or directly), processing, diesel, insurance, the upkeep, oh the list could go on. on what is arguably more or less a petty crime in normal circumstance as in direct to speed, yet only done because it is easy and most lucrative of any….the only one where crime does actually pay. 1 Quote
bonio Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 I've nothing against speed cameras and the like. If I don't want to pay the fines, I don't have to speed. And round here at least everyone knows where the cameras and mobile crews hang out, so it not so hard to calm it down at the right places. 3 Quote
RideWithStyles Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 (edited) Agree. merely pointing a fact as to what driving and maintaining this directive of rather than the one they claim it is for and pay by. And obviously not really following/chasing up an actual crime so the scum can carry on the next day but only filling in the absolute bare minimum for a folder of ticking boxes is a disgrace and wasting of taxpayers money at worst fueling the problem. though some areas for speed limits are not always marked out well for non locals as how would they know? just a add a little thought, most caught would be locals to a percentage. psychologically getting caught, bollocked and written a ticket face to face by a copper in uniform has a better effect of curbing (also they can check if they are valid licence, tax, mot, drinking, drugged, reason of criminal act at the same time). where as a faceless envelope with threats, warnings and demands just makes people pissed off for most of the fact, only they’re saving grace they might offer us of a driving awareness course to some point dodge a bullet or just of a slap lessens this rage, mentally speaking of course. Pie man Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 We lived in a small village many many years ago, and my old man and our neighbour who was a coal man, (the days of delivering coal in a sack over your shoulder) who was built like a brick Sh1thouse and my old man who was a rugby prop, caught a burglar, they sent him on his merry way and didn't bother with the police. I saw the lad several weeks later walking with crutches, cant think what happened, but he must of had an accident or something. 3 1 Quote

Id agree and say it’s like parking fines - but then I drove in Nottingham again last week and the entire city’s road network is geared towards trucking you into a speeding fine. Oodles of cameras, constantly changing speed limits frequently hiding behind a corner. Feel sorry for residents, but I’ll only do 30 on every road even if it’s a 40 or 50 because I know it’ll be back to 30 in 50m. 3 Quote
Hairsy Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 In case anyone isn’t aware and it would be useful, Waze has an alert option where it will play a tone if you are X% above the speed limit. In areas of regularly changing speed limit, it does sometimes make me realise I’ve missed a change of limit. Obviously needs a comms system to be able to hear it but if you use one anyway then it’s an easy thing to do. And I’m fairly sure it operates even when you’re not navigating. You just need Waze to be running. So it can be in your pocket if you don’t have / want it mounted visibly. 2 Quote
