What’s your opinion of noisy riders? I despise them!

I live in a nice neighbourhood some 100 metres from a main road. Plenty of tree and hedges between me and the road, but at this time of year I’m forced to endure the noise of sport motorbikes and choppers tearing up and down the main road and nearby roundabout leading to the motorway - some of them no doubt are racing around just for ‘fun’ and not even getting from A to B. My house has double glazing, but the sound gets in. It’s pretty much all day long, but especially bad at the weekend. Sometimes I’m woken in the early hours and have sympathy for those living nearer the road. 

So…motorcyclists. Whats your opinion of this? I can’t help but think that an inconsiderate minority should not be allowed to disrupt the peace in this way. There are plenty of studies showing that road noise is prejudicial to health (it certainly stresses me out), so any argument that ‘loud bikes are seen bikes’ seems not to take into account the hundreds, if not thousands of people negatively affected by the noise. Risk your own necks by all means, but stop disturbing residents who just want a bit of peace and quiet.

I live in a nice neighborhood about 1/4 of a mile from a main road, does my head in too, as most of the riders on here are of a similar age ahhhem you will find we are pretty much very considerate and unlikely to he the ones racing up and down your road.

Strangely enough its all cars around my way doing that on the local bypass. Youths round here not interested in Motorbikes it seems

Yup, we have way more idiots in cars than we do on bikes.

You come in a motorbike page trying to get support?   You think that's likely? 

 

With some bikers, it's become a race to the top for volume, some people will take it to the extreme.  

 

Don't worry regulations and noise cameras are on the way. 

 

Can I suggest you don't buy a house on a main road to or from a hospital, police station and I would say fire station but they rarely go out these days.

 

I know someone who bought a house by a race track, then spent there time complaining about the noise

The loudest noises where I live are sirens or boy racers in cars. Rarely hear a bike and my own isn't particularly loud. Certainly meets Euro5 legislation.

I think all riders should ride within the law. Do I expect that in a Motorbike forum? Yes.

Where did I say anything about breaking the law?   More suggesting the law is going to get tightened up in this respect.

Yup.  I heard of an affluent guy who bought an house right next to an historic airfield, then tried his best to get the airfield shut down because the planes were noisy.

A Tattooist opened up next door to the chippy I work at. He came around to speak to the owner and said it smells on the street of fish and chips and he might need to get the council to take action.

 

The owner told him the Fish shop had been there at least 40 years to his knowledge, he had owned it for 15 of those. He had all the extraction going towards the sky and was doing everything the council required. Also most importantly the fish shop was there when you chose the location and decided to open up next door to it! 

 

Never heard another peep out of him and he moved to another town about a year later

It's mainly cars and young kids on bikes with cheap eBay exhausts here. Which being a city is constant.

There definitely are not as many noisy motorcycles as years ago. But I see a guy warming up his R1 for at least five minutes some mornings. Straight through pipes at 6:30. I bet his neighbours love that.

Round here people bought houses built on a road leading to a farm, then complain about tractors going past their houses. 

 

And people buy houses near Oulton Park and then complain about the noise. 

 

We get lads on small bikes who remove the exhaust baffles thinking it will sound like a big bike. Then they struggle to get up the hill because they have lowered the power output. They make a racket which is silly and annoying. Big engined bikes make less noise than cars in my experience.

I will avoid the grey area of modified exhaust still within the legal limits.

Some will stick to it , some will bend it, but very few break it.

 

what makes it worst is the expression and comparison.

cars have had to get lot quieter and cleaner with smaller engines, turbos, hybrids, dpf’s, many exhausts and cats attached (which is a questionable debate in its self) very quickly and they can do as they are massive to stuff many gubbins and loads of pipe works/damping in.
cars a mass produced plus with EVs now diluting the ratio, bikes are an extremely narrow portion with a very slow development and graduation of changes so they are still relatively old school.

 

They don’t have space to put what cars have now and they work at higher limits. 

Most cars only work from 1500-5800prm but average of 3-4000.
my 2005 600 e3 which still has std exhaust and can pass London clean air zone only wakes up at 6500 let alone the 11000 it goes to which is pretty low for a 600, Its engine is louder than the exhaust.
My old 500 was e4 two less cylinders , more sensors and ecus, a cat, which was 14years younger and in most cases the engine was quieter but the exhaust was actually louder even bumbling through towns at 30mph and it still had the std exhaust on, I never even thought or changing it.
wifes old 125 was louder than the most previous cars (VW,fiat,etc) we had and that was a std exhaust on and commuter bike. 

Maybe as more strict regulations come into play and attitudes change they will move with it, if the EV forcement doesn’t come into play first.

Bikes engines are rarely shielded or dampened because they are not encased around a proper body work with additional covers on like cars are.

so now you get used to more of the less noisy vehicles yet a lot of bikes which have stayed the same appear noisier as they are not dampening out as much with nearly as loud cars.
I saw an old Quattro in mint condition yet std the other day, even at idle it was bumbling away louder than any other car about that was moving, smelled the unburnt fuel and oil- ahhhh bliss.

Ohhh- the story of people moving into suspect areas. A plastics factory been around for 100years or so, ran 7 days and nights every week to keep with demand, slowly down sizing but still needed to most run days and nights.

so the excess land was sold to developer, they make houses on the land but its still right next door to the factory…factory makes some large investments and changes to accommodate the new builds, yet they would still complain and point blame over everything and anything even if it had nothing to do or relevance…and the most common people replied was why the fook did you spend a ton of money to live there then?

or a sheet metal place,been there for like 30+years, worked days 9-5 I think yet they still complain about the noise the main press machine made.

I can't complain too much about where I live.  Garden backs on to a cemetery so its nice and quiet here.  If the 'neighbours', as it were, ever get rowdy, then that is a major cause for concern.  

On topic though, I try to be as considerate as I possibly can be, and don't exactly ride a noisy bike.  CG125 with the standard exhaust, so pretty quiet as bikes go.  That said, if I ever have to warm the bike up, or rev the engine a bit, and it is super early morning or late at night, I tend to wheel myself down to the bottom of the road where there are no houses and do it there.  Middle of the day though?  I do it outside my house.  Much to the chagrin of the Dogs who have decided that motorcycle noise = existential threat that they must go on attack to destroy.  Vicious little fluffy killing machines our Dogs.
