  1. I ride my R1 or silverwing to work, more often the scoot and see the same bikes going the other way most days. There was a guy on a small KTM that didn't used to nod if i was on the scooter but in the end I must have worn him down and now he does. Maybe he twigged I was the same person as I wear the same helmet on both. There is even a lad on an L plated moped that nods when I'm on either bike.
  2. Got our first energy payment of £66 from the government today. Thanks a lot Liz, now if you can restore the £5k my pension has lost since you and KK took office.
  3. Got my monies worth out of them, should be changed every 8000 miles
  4. Replaced the plugs and air filter on the Silverwing, last changed about 22k miles ago when I bought it. Plugs are hidden under a small cover in front of the seat. Filter is under the RH side panel, filter cover itself held on by 12 screws, Honda didn't want that to fall off. Quite a considerable difference in paper density between old and new, you can see daylight easily through the new. Took it for a run after and it did seem to pick up better and a slight hesitation on first opening the throttle has gone.
  5. My 2001 R1 does this occasionally, a bit of key wriggling works but the signs are there it may cease to work fully one day. I do spray wd40 in it but can't really tell if its improved as it doesn't do it all the time. Bikes done 42000 miles. By contrast, my 52 year old Hondas ignition works like new. Don't make 'em like they use to...
  6. We had 7 sealed units earlier this year including one half of a patio door, the others were just average sized bedroom windows. I got a quote from one company who couldn't replace two because they couldn't reach over a porch or lean to roof. I asked can't you just replace them from the inside but no that wasn't possible. Waste of time. Got another contact, he quoted £1100 supply and fitted so we went for that. Did a great job and I asked him how he wanted to be paid, he said he would take £1000 cash. Result, spent the saved £100 on the M3.
  7. Is it because Bulb is in special administration and not making a profit?
  8. Just got an e-mail from Bulb saying our payments are going down, from £170 to £145. We are £420 in credit so enough of a buffer if they've got their sums wrong.
  9. Glad you have found the source of the problem. Not sure I would straighten valves, the steel will be fatigued from the initial bend and further from being bent back. Add in the heat when running and the valves will be weakened.
  10. How do you plan to pressurise the cylinder with the cam chain disconnected? Spinning it over on the starter with the chain lòose sounds a risky plan.
  11. When the rod broke, has the unconnected piston clipped the valves? Have you access to a leakdown tester, you will be able to determine where the air is escaping from.
  12. Do a wet compression test, squirt a bit of oil in the cylinder and repeat the comp test, if the results rise it points to piston ring and bore wear. Won't help with a hole in the piston or if there is a big chunk out the piston crown. Check for top end problems; valve clearances, burnt valves, incorrect cam timing (cam chain jumped), bent valves (you haven't dropped something into the intake while carbs off?), head gasket. Was it ok the last time you ran it?
  13. The tester did also mention a lip on the rear disc and he did repeat the brake test several times so clearly its a bit borderline in his eyes. Even though its probably going to be a ball ache I think I'll get them changed before next year. Front will be easy as that's been off already, will just need a bit more determination on the rear.
  14. MOT'd the Silverwing today, passed with a couple of advisories on brake fluctuation. Already bought a new disc for the rear as he commented on it last year, but I couldn't get the disc retaining bolts undone despite all the usual heating, soaking and hitting the bolt heads. New pads improved it but its not really noticeable on the road. Will have to buy a front disc and pads and have another crack at the rear one. Did 8000 miles in a year, now on 72k.
  15. As @Old-codger says two strokes can leak from that joint. My own RGV has two exhaust gaskets per cylinder and after a rebuild began to weep. Took it apart and the two inner gaskets made of a coil of asbestos type material and what looked like tin foil had crushed and fell apart. I bought genuine Suzuki gaskets and has been good ever since.
  16. My Mrs has a 5dr 2005 BMW120d, pre dpf and the reliable M47 engine. Can't fault it for all round use, back seats fold flat for tip run duties, 5 seater for the grandkid runs, and a pokey 2 litre engine for easy long distance cruising. Round town does 40mpg and up to 50 on a run. Had ours four years and had nothing major go wrong with it in 20k miles. They did an E87 1 series in petrol if you didnt want diesel but i think they are a bit unreliable. Other option I was looking at before buying it was an Audi A3.
  17. They were probably smirking at his ineptitude, he was thinking he had said something clever but the UN had heard it all before.
  18. Ronald Reagan warned Europe about it in 1981.
  19. For those with a smart meter and don't mind sharing, what are your daily energy costs currently? Ours are around £2.50 to £4 a day depending on how much washing Mrs B does. Just the two of us in a 3 bed semi. Supplier is Bulb or the government since Bulb "went out" earlier this year. Paying £170 a month and about £400 in credit at the last statement.
  20. Smells like a scam, what's the buyers ebay feedback like? What if the courier turned up without cash but a dodgy cheque and some tall story then tries to convince you to hand the bike over? I'd pass on it.
  21. Ah ok, normally advertised as unrecorded salvage. I went to view another bike at this location a couple of years ago, wouldn't go back...
  22. Person driving a white people carrier thing in Daventry this morning. Going around one of the roundabouts on the way to work, planning to take the 3rd exit, go past the 2nd exit and indicate left, white car approaches from my left and comes straight onto the roundabout and we miss by fractions. Pretty sure if I had braked we would have collided. Showed my displeasure with appropriate hand signals.
  23. Not that I'm the slightest bit interested in buying this, just found it browsing ebay, how can this be advertised as HPI clear when it looks like the head stock is ripped from the frame? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134206498599
  24. Heading towards Daventry this morning, came across a tractor towing a trailer stacked high with straw bales. At least two stacks of bales had fell off, luckily into the hedge, dread to think what could have happened had they fell the other way into oncoming traffic. Give the things a wide berth.
  25. No I understand what hypocrisy means and union leaders, not just ML are guilty of it. Union leaders pay is widely available to see online, which figures you believe is up to you but they are far in excess of the average workers they represent. Perhaps we should ask James Robinson who wrote the article I originally quoted where he got his facts from? I don't subscribe to the Mail, I read articles across all the MSM and yes Piers Morgan is a tw@t. As I said earlier , I'm not disputing their right to strike, why they are striking recently or the fact ML represents them, merely their criticism of company bosses pay when they themselves are well rewarded compared to the workers, that is the hypocrisy. If the union members are happy with the disparity in pay, well that's their choice. I also never said that unions should be scrapped, they have a place in society, my daughter and son in law are in one and they have just negotiated a deal with their company which is very generous. I wasn't criticising RBs quote or himself, I just expected it to be from some politician or state figure.I think he is a bit of a berk on stage but I saw him doing a serious interview and he came across as a smart guy. I didn't single out ML, you did, I was talking about union leaders in general and the fact they are as greedy for wealth as any capitalist Tory fat cat that they so despise.
