Mississippi Bullfrog Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 Sunday being Remembrance Sunday I am leading events at our local war memorials - I say it in the plural as today will be the third and fourth services I am conducting for Remembrance. I shall be telling the story of Bob Daniels, a stoker on HMS Vanguard. Bob was engaged to Louie Treble and they had bought a terraced house in Liverpool backing onto the railway line. On 9th July 1917 Bob left Vanguard on summer leave and took the boat ashore. On reaching the mainland he realised he had left a gift he'd bought for Louie on board ship. He got the last boat back knowing he'd have to stay on board overnight and get the first morning boat ashore. At 11.20pm a flame was seen to erupt from Vanguard and moment later she blew up. It is believed the explosion was due to faulty ammunition on board. Of the 845 men on board only 2 survived. Bob was one of the casualities. His name is on the war memorial at Chatham. Louise never met anyone else and lived in the house they had bought until she died. She was my mother's aunt so I remember visiting her when I was young. The suffering of war was lived by Louise every day of her life. It is as much about those who are left behind, those who live with injuries seen and unseen, as those who give their lives. 4 4 Quote
Steve_M Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 Deep Purple at the OVO, Glasgow this evening. They were among my favourite bands when I was a yoof, so hoping they live up to my rose-tinted (or should that be “purple tinted”?) memories. 5 Quote
rennie Posted November 10, 2024 Author Posted November 10, 2024 I'm still visiting she's not home yet so I won't be actively taking part in any remembrance events this year but I will be thinking of them 6 Quote

Mississippi Bullfrog Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 We have been looking after the grandchildren Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I am destroyed. They, on the other hand, are still bouncing off the walls. 1 3 Quote

On 11th I'd have gone back to sea in a flash had it been on offer. According to my wife the tiny terrorists were being exemplary. 2 4 Quote
bonio Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 We've had the oldest one on his own for a sleepover and he was as good as an angel. But when they bring their parents with them, it's a completely different story. 1 Quote

Mawsley Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Emails from the council confirm two days of salting has been done, so the bike absolutely isn’t getting de-SORNed yet. I was catching the train to the footy on Saturday so the wife can have the car and go see her Dad in hospital…but they want to charge me £68 for a trip that’s take an hourish by road. F that. I’m now going to be sharing a coach with old people who smell of stale urine and are flatulent. *Sorry, got that the wrong way around, they’ll be stuck on a coach with me. 2 2 Quote
Shepherd Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Currently on a coach en route to the Christmas markets in Germany with Wife, Daughter and Daughters fella. It has been agreed that he and I needn't traipse around stalls full of the same old tat ( her words ), so we are going to take refuge in the bars. I haven't had a drink session for years, so it could get messy very quickly 3 5 Quote
