red hedgehog Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 Got fed up with foot pumps ! I need to buy something to do tyres on the bikes and the car. Maybe mains powered or clip onto battery -cig lighter socket ? Anyone got any recommendations please ? Quote
Lateralus Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 The petrol station round the corner from my house has a free powered air pump, maybe look for something like that near you? We have a 12v one in the car, but it's loud, slow and feeble. Quote
Gerontious Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 I use my stirrup pump... It's made for bicycle tyres which mostly.have extremely high pressures compared to motorbike tyres. 100psi is fairly normal.. So it's over engineered for motorbike tyres... It's also very quick and less hassle, for me anyway than the foot pump. I also have a 12v bike powered pump... But it's for emergency use only.fixing punctures at the roadside. An Airman. Tour. Currently £19on eBay. You. Will need. A power socket for it though.. Lighter. Or BMW type Hella. Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 I use a Halfords digital tyre pump - for the bike I run it off a lithium ion starter pack. Does the job great. Quote
tuktuk Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 Bicycle track pump then hand pressure guage thing to set pressure accurately. Quote
stevevac49 Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 I just take into nearest tyre centre and ask them if they will check the pressure for me. They always do it free no problem. Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk Quote
Stu Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 If I have a lot of pumping to do I use this https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-ranger-7500-2hp-7-5cfm-50ltr-air-compr/ if not a lot I just use a foot pump! I never use a garage gauge as they are notoriously inaccurate plus when you ride there you warm the tyres up and cause the pressure to increase which also gives a false reading even if it is around the corner! I would only ever use one in an emergency Quote

I would only ever use one in an emergency This thing about the pressure gauges and warm tyres is so important and so often overlooked. I paid about £50 for a racetech gauge (prices vary wildly from£20-£hundreds) and have tested it with the local garage which is a 2 minute slow ride away. Totally different readings. Ignore garage gauges, they're left out in all temperatures, battered by misuse and are about as much use as sticking a finger in the air. Quote
red hedgehog Posted July 9, 2017 Author Posted July 9, 2017 I had a bad experience with a horse lorry and a garage airline which resulted in me limping home with a much flatter tyre Thanks for all the advice ! Quote
Guest Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Hi, this kind of device really interested me so I scraped around and this is what I found, who knows, maybe that's what you've been looking for https://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Compressor-Automatic-Inflator-18450/dp/B00806Z76SI'm not sure, but also you can pop into this store, I believe there's something of the sort www.giga-tyres.co.uk Quote

bonio Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Bicycle stirrup pump and hand pressure guage for me. Works a treat. Quote
Throttled Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 I have found that I need one of these to get petrol station air pumps to fit onto the valve on the bike. Quote
Gerontious Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 Some bikes have sideways valves as standard.. I'm surprised more wheel makers dont employ them.http://i.imgur.com/JmilfoAl.jpg Quote
Stu Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 I'm surprised more wheel makers dont employ them. Probably like most things Cost Quote
Joeman Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 Bmw had a good idea - put the valve on the spoke Quote
JackieOWheels Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 Rather than starting a new post, I thought I'll just piggyback on this one. Anyone able to recommend a decent foot pump to get? I don't have a 12v plug on the bike nor do I fancy one of those air compressors, thinking of using a good old fashion foot pump to keep in my panniers just for emergencies. Quote

A foot pump in the panniers! For emergencies! Honestly get a small compressor and fit a 12v supply Quote

JackieOWheels Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 Now I finally know why sometimes those links don't show up at my end. I've disabled it for this forum. Quote
