SometimesSansEngine Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 This has been doing the rounds today and for most people it seems quite accurate. You basically answer a load of questions about phrases you use and the way you speak and it tries to guess what part of the country you are fromhttps://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/02/15/upshot/british-irish-dialect-quiz.htmlI did the 25 questions version and it pretty much guessed at my West Country background Did the full version (about 95 questions, but doesn't take that long really) and it starts to scream ZUMMERZET Quote
Tiggie Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 Got me right with West Yorkshire. Though I might do it again through an american proxy to make sure its not cheating!! I nearly closed the page when I saw this question Quote
Slowlycatchymonkey Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 I pretty sure it was the use of the word ‘daps’ that pinned it on the southwest! Quote
SometimesSansEngine Posted February 15, 2019 Author Posted February 15, 2019 They are plimsolls! I've had this argument many a time and never been proven wrong yet ps they're daps Quote
Bender Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 Daps? Are they like baps for dyslexic folk Quote
Slowlycatchymonkey Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 My family moved down here from London when I was 3yrs old and my mum has never stopped muttering “plimsolls” under her breath whenever someone says daps!Shame she’s missing out on saying “spanky daps” Quote

NeilM Posted February 16, 2019 Posted February 16, 2019 Evidently west York's must use same or similar words to Carlisle Quote
SometimesSansEngine Posted February 16, 2019 Author Posted February 16, 2019 What was funny doing mine was all the words of my childhood coming back. I've definitely tempered a few things over time (I remember it being a source of great hilarity that I asked what time tea was going to be at a work thing in a different part of the country once) but I know I speak more like I did as a child when I'm around my folks.
