I won't go near the money grabbing shit hole. I would ride in the Untied Kingdom before Switzerland. Wait a minute, what am I saying ? I couldn't cope with the weather and the bad, overcrowded roads any more. I'll stick to Europe thank you....apart from that cess pit in the middle ! 1 Quote
Steve_M Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 Good-ish morning good fellows and fellowesses. it’s 7.48 here in Laxou and I’m looking forward to a 5 hour ride to Rotterdam. Actually, that’s not strictly accurate. I have 5 hours of motorway like roads to endure after a night with delayed sleep due to a hotel fire alarm (false alarm, may I add) which means I’m feeling a bit weary already. The hotel was pretty rubbish at managing the alarm with people wandering around not heading for the fire escapes, no staff giving guidance. It would have been a disaster had it been a real fire! 1 1 1 Quote

S-Westerly Posted September 22, 2024 Author Posted September 22, 2024 Norway used to be pretty similar with zero tolerance for speeding and on the spot fines. I assume it still is. Shame as the roads are rather good. That said if you visit a foreign country you either follow their rules or be prepared to pay the price for failing to do so, which may well be expensive. 2 Quote
bonio Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 This blokes experience isnt uncommon. So much easier to stay in France or Germany or Austria. 2 Quote

Personally I have absolutely zero sympathy. It’s no secret that the Swiss take a very dim view of speeding. It’s no secret that the Swiss police target popular passes and especially at weekends. It’s no secret that the fines are staggeringly high and although these are mitigated somewhat by the financial ability of the person involved - this is only true if you are a Swiss citizen. This intolerance of speeding is something the Swiss are perfectly happy with. They could change it any time they want with a referendum - they choose not to. It’s their country. If you don’t like the way they operate - stay away. I choose to stay away. 4 Quote

The bloke by his own admission was going 17mph over the limit, he can’t be whinging about it if he gets caught. Let’s be honest, it’s hardly a secret about the Swiss and their fines, it’s been known for years. Another thing. I’m no angel myself but if I got caught for speeding, I certainly wouldn’t be shoving it on Facebook for everybody to see. 2 Quote
curlylegend Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 Earlier this month a Swiss millionaire was fined over €100,000 for driving too close to the vehicle in front. They take into account your earnings when calculating the fine. Who would be a millionaire in Switzerland that couldn't drive carefully. You'd think he could afford a chauffeur ! 1 Quote

I was home for June and most of July when it was mostly bloody cold or wet. Joined my ship on 28th of July so missed anything since and from what I've heard it wasn't much. 1 Quote
bonio Posted September 23, 2024 Posted September 23, 2024 Summer here started about the third week of July. Had some grand weather from then right until now. But it's all about to come to an end now... Quote
