THIS REFLECTS MY PERSONAL VIEWS ONLY

I strongly defend freedom of expression and any form of repression should be banned regardless of the subject.

Having said that...

I would like to meet (as for sure many other people would) the brainless, moronic, low life, waste of space and oxygen tw@t that did this to one of the Portuguese monuments...

This monument was first built in 1940 and later rebuilt with permanent materials in 1960.

It marks the 500 year anniversary of the death of the Infant D. Henrique, the main force for the Portuguese sea travels around the world (being his statue the first from the left).

Regardless of individual opinions, and I'm not arguing who is correct, when I don't like a monument because it represents something I don't agree with, I just don't visit the place.

Nothing gives the right to damage others' cultural monuments. Unfortunately, our planet is full of these idiots and this is just another idiotic event following many others.

Fortunately, and thanks to a technology very common in the Portuguese restauration industry, the monument was completely cleaned by 00:14 today (10/8/21) less than 2 days after the vandals despicable actions.

Well.

For the looks of it someone will be facing justice.

The title below translates as:

"Judicial Police (PJ) (Portuguese police that deals with criminal acts) is searching for Leila Lakel, a French art student whom vandalized the "Padrao dos Descobrimentos""

According to Portuguese news agencies the French woman has done other vandalizing acts similar to this one across the world.

This brainless tw@t even recorded a video of the graffiti with the comment at the end "It's done. Goodbye Lisbon."

She then deleted the account but not in time allowing PJ to identify the culprit. Mainly by the signature left LIA which has allowed Portuguese authorities to link this idiot to other graffiti in other locations.

PJ is now in pursuit of the student and will deploy EU mechanism for an arrest warrant to bring her to justice.

For this act alone she will be facing a maximum jail sentence of 5 years with a minimum of 600 days penalty.

Being identified for other international crimes she will be facing prosecution on other countries.

Polícia Judiciária está em busca de Leila Lakel, a estudante de arte francesa que vandalizou o Padrão dos Descobrimentos

Now....

Can anybody explain me how a art student (I know she's French..) does this type of crime on a art monument? 🤔

If I remember correctly it's down by the river front on the Lisbon side of the Tagus? It's like the fuckwits scrawling on Churchill's statue. Stupid as mud.

We were there a couple of years back, there's a fascinating nautical museum right by it.

Perhaps she thinks she is some kind of Banksy?

Anyone else did what he does its graffiti, Banksy does it and its art.

Yes Banksy is an artist while this woman is a moron.

Portugal have several graffiti artists that are known internationally, however there is a reason why none of them ever did anything similar. It is a national monument that many people immediately recognise, almost the same as the Christ statue in Rio de Janeiro or the liberty statue in NY.

Certain places are not to be messed with.

Can't say I know about the museum. In my younger days we'd stagger past the monument in the wee hours having spent the evening in the less salubrious parts of Lisbon's waterfront areas. We'd then take the ferry across the river to where the old Lisnave shipyards used to be. During the day we were usually busy fixing stuff.

Nowadays all those are gone.

Lisnave is now a cleared site, although the gantry crane is still there and no plans to remove it.

Back in 2001 Almada council proposed to the government a development plan for the area but never took of. 2005 there was an article in an civil engineering journal praising the idea but knowing the Portuguese government it will only go ahead when the socialist party currently now in gov will win the council leadership.

The "less salubrious" areas have been upgraded to really nice social areas. :)

I'm sure they have! Once they shifted the shipyards down to Setubal there wouldn't have been the customer base for all the bars and ladies of easy virtue. I was last there in 1988 to re-activate a half million tonner. I was but a lowly 2nd Mate in those days.

I'm not surprised @S-Westerly back then Lisnave was the largest dry dock in the world and the only place where the big girls could be serviced 😀

But that was in the 70's :thumb:

Just found an article saying that back in 2017 the gov has given green light for the development of the area.

Then in this other article

https://www.idealista.pt/news/imobiliario/habitacao/2019/02/14/38775-os-projetos-que-farao-de-almada-a-riviera-portuguesa

Is saying that several international investors are already showing interest in the project.

Not only the Lisnave yards will be transformed in a luxury complex with a marina but also it will include the "Cais do Gingal" this is the area west of the ferries to the base of the 25th April bridge.

I'm pleased that the emblematic gantry crane will be part of the new development 😎

Far too nice an area / location to be an industrial site. That said the working class area adjacent to the yard had some cery nice cafe bars and restaurants. Nothing fancy but in sardine season fresh sardines barbecued with a decent salad and a bottle of vinho verde was a pretty decent way to spend an evening.

There was one other ship yard in Europe that could take that size of ship - Chantiers in Brest. Mine - Esso Pacific was done in Lisnave, our sister ship - Esso Atlantic- was done in Brest. Two slightly smaller (440kt) sisters were also done in Lisnave.

Jahre Viking was a dog. She was jumboised to make her more that 600,000 tonnes but they never upgraded her steering so in bad weather she was unsteerable in autopilot. The big Esso ones (Atlantic and Pacific) were much better. They were designed to be fast by the standards of the class. 15 knots loaded and 18 in ballast. 200 tonnes a day of fuel though. Used to take bunkers in 20,000 tonne parcels. "Green" they were not.

The bars and restaurants are still there and thriving.

You will get the cheaper (used by locals) restaurants mixed with the pricey seafood and A la carte menu if you want and can afford it.

One of the most emblematic are the "Cabrinha" (little goat) http://www.cabrinha.com.pt/home.php?sec=menu and "Atira-te ao rio" https://atirateaorio.com/   on the high end.

The cheaper restaurants are usually in the very narrow street from the roundabout from the ferries to the right (coming from the ferry). You need to know where you're going or you will miss it.

In there you have in excess of 15 "tascas" with great food with prices usually rounding €7 for a full meal.

I can't advise which is the best just because has been a few years since I went there (2007) and things will have changed.

If I remember the little back street eating places the fish was amazing but then they served it with very ordinary veg. Dirt cheap though.

Yeah. The reason behind it is to celebrate the fish (possibly haddock or cod).

If you have charcoal grilled sardines you will only have boiled potatoes with it. With sardines you're supposed to eat them off a slice of bread so the oil and juices of the sardine goes into the bread which you will eat at the end :thumb:

That's what we did as it was sardine season (June/ July) and the only veg we bothered with was fresh salads.
