Bender Posted August 11, 2022 Posted August 11, 2022 We've had a spate of fires, I'm pretty sure most have probably been started by twats. The day after and the smoke still rises from one of the bigger ones. 4 Quote
onesea Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 Had a couple locally, the last 2 Saturdays. Third Saturday Fire brigade held public consultation on the common. No fire that week. Alarming how quick they take off… 1 Quote
Bender Posted August 12, 2022 Author Posted August 12, 2022 Yup and once the fire gets big enough to draw the air in its like a blast furnace, there were some lovely young oaks on the willows that went up, I hope they survived I've grown up with them. Quote
onesea Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 (edited) I see Studland has gone up now. Afew naturists will of for more of a team than expected. https://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/20627599.everything-know-far-studland-heath-fire/ I wonder how many heath's are going to harder to control because they have not been on fire. The local one used to have controlled burning, and local kids set a light once in a whilst. It hasn't happened so much recently so there is much more to burn. Edited August 12, 2022 by onesea Quote
Bender Posted August 12, 2022 Author Posted August 12, 2022 I can see another tonight on far hillside. Quote
KiwiBob Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 Its still nowhere near as bad as 1976 .. Back then Notts fire brigade were going to 300 wildfires every day! They even had to get some green goddesses in as they ran out of fire trucks. Quote

We had no fires in 76 and def non in the places that are going up in smoke now, we once set fire to a farmers field by accident, it wasn't weather related. Quote
KiwiBob Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 Perhaps its time to do as Australia and New Zealand do during times like these and bring in a total fire ban? 1 Quote

Not going to help when its either Arson or accidental in way of glass or other waste that started it ... Round home they have stopped selling portable BBQs, to protect the forset. When it just me and misses that's what we used. So we no longer have BBQs ass we have to find a shop selling them. However idiots coming down still being them aplenty. Although this dry spell has seemed to off brought more sence. Edited August 12, 2022 by onesea Quote

Probably Last night we could smell burning in our house, had a quick walk round outside couldn't see anything near us but it was strongest in our house and a bit of a chemical whiff, hmm like fire lighter fluid, goes upstairs the idiots that back onto our garden had decided to have a bbq at 9.45 at night with little sparks flickering away as they wafted over the gardens. S-Westerly Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 At least at night you can see the little sparks,in daytime you can't. 1 Quote
Mickly Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 I thought it was a good idea to replace the garage’s yellowing plastic window panes with glass. In the last hot spell I was working in there and got a whiff of burning - after a quick look I found my soldering stand with magnifying glass burning it’s way through a plastic bag & some YSS stickers, thank god I was in there. I have since pinned some old duvet covers up at the windows until this madness ends. 1 2 Quote
Tiggie Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 I once brought a firework to my Wife's parents bonfire party. It was deemed to be too big for the garden by Father-in-law so it ended up sitting in his garage for months until it was forgot about. One day he was doing some welding and noticed the spatter was falling all over it. Nothing actually happened apart from him going "oh shit!!" and taking it outside before carrying on. A potentially fantastic story ruined 2 Quote
manxie49 Posted August 14, 2022 Posted August 14, 2022 Had a biggish one here yesterday, down at Groudle, started by a disposable BBQ apparently .... Those will be the next thing to get banned! Quote

onesea Posted August 14, 2022 Posted August 14, 2022 Just now, manxie49 said: Didn't think it would be long before that happened It’s been happening in the New Forest for years, social media campaigns. As soon as one is seen in the shops in the spring, drought or not. Surprisingly successful, which is frustrating when my misses and I uses them in the garden when it’s not so dry. Still it’s like buying cigarettes these days, it actually adds to the pleasure. Kind of naughty like buying a top shelf magazine as a kid. 4 Quote
