onesea Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 Rare I think he has got it wrong but…. I believe they do help reduce the minor injuries if you have a small scale off. Dropping your bike outside anyone? The incidents that don’t get reported, less chipped bones l fewer visits to minor injuries. Hitting things at speed he might be right they might be of little use. Rare I fall on the side of safety but on this one… 2 Quote
Gerontious Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 (edited) Some random Canadian with an opinion. Who cares. The moment he opens his gob my reaction - “go away”. I can’t remember the last time he had anything useful to say to me. He lives in Canada. What use is that to me here in the UK? It’s why I pay no attention to American sites and videos. Except occasionally to look on in a kind of ghastly fascination like you do when passing a car crash. Edited April 3, 2024 by Gerontious 2 4 Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 I noted that he released this on 1 April. He usually has interesting things to say, and this is interesting, but I will be keeping my armour in place. Not least because if there were to be an accident and I got hurt any insurance settlement could be influenced by my choice to remove the armour. And anyway - as he says - if you want protection wear an airvest, which I do. 1 Quote

Joe85 Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 All i know is every off i've had i've been fortunate enough to have worn armor, and my pointy bits have always come out unscathed (excluding fingers). The fact that it just exists within the clothing, and isn't some additional faffery to put on makes me question why anyone would consider taking it out. 3 Quote
daveinlim Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 I've had 1 accident where I was rear ended when stopped at traffic lights. Low impact I'm the grand scheme of things but the padding stopped me having any major medical issues even though the bike was written off. I'll be forking out for an airbag this summer, probably helite. 1 Quote
S-Westerly Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 (edited) Knock on wood but the only off I've had at anything other than really slow was long ago when I had a helmet, gloves and boots but otherwise just had regular clothing on. Armour wouldn't have made any difference as the only injury I got was the bar end digging into my thigh. That said I now have decent gear with mostly Ghost D30 armour. I'm not planning on removing it any time soon. Edited April 3, 2024 by S-Westerly 2 Quote
Simon Davey Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 No way I'm removing any armour. My off was a minicab from the right side. It hit me so hard the exhausts were bent under the bike, the forks twisted, the swing-arm bent, foot-peg and brake lever sheared. I was wearing good leathers with armour and summersaulted over the bars and landed on the back of my head/shoulders. My boots (which had more buckles than Clarkes) saved my foot from going under the bike with the exhaust whilst I did my aerobatics. Whatever those statics were he quoted, they had nothing to do with me. 3 Quote
Fiddlesticks Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 Slow speed off on snow. The hip and elbow padding did its job. 4 Quote
Capt Sisko Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 The crucial point of the video for me is that the armour was, and still is built to a low standard that was agreed on by the industries main players in 1997 for EN1621-1 and 2003 for '2. Okay that's not good, but it's history and we can't change that, however very few other things automotive are still using a 20yr & more standards. EURO 1, 2, etc for emissions, NCap, Helmets and many many more have been updated, made more stringent, safer or whatever since their initial introduction to either keep up the momentum of improvements in safety, emissions or just keep up with technology. So why are we either seeing 'the authorities' issuing updated & tougher standard for armour? They obviously do look at things periodically as we've just seen the introduction of a new helmet standard that none of us users asked for, but someone somewhere thought necessary. 1 Quote

It is heavy but once on I don't notice it. It soon becomes second nature to unclip it before dismounting but if you forget the gentle tug of the cord reminds you. 1 Quote
S-Westerly Posted April 4, 2024 Posted April 4, 2024 Bennetts Bike Social has an interesting video rebutting Fortnine's and is quite technical. They are basically saying he's wrong politely. 3 Quote

manxie49 Posted April 4, 2024 Posted April 4, 2024 Having had, what I would consider anyway, as two significant off's over the years, then I can hand on heart say that I will not be removing any of my armour. IMHO, the armour I had in at that time saved me from injuries that could potentially have been a lot more serious, had it not have been present. I think he's entitled to his opinion, but as for me, I personally don't agree with him. 1 Quote
