Phil3639 Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 Hi everyone New here and need some advice. What is everyone running when it comes down to number plates. I need to get a new one for my bike as mine is very small (the number plate before anyone starts!!) I really don't want to put a 9x7 also I really need to keep the longer/car style due to it being a private plate. So just looking for companies who supply and really how small can I go without picking up fines everyone I go out. Thanks Quote

Fiddlesticks Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 I've used these guys in the past, they have a motorbike section : https://www.jdmplates.co.uk/smallest-motorcycle-number-plates/ Quote
Nick the wanderer Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 In the past I've gone 7x5 but I think that's just a tiny shade too small/ could warrant too much suspicion. These days I go 8x6 which I think suits the bike nicely. If you go this size make sure the letters/numbers are reduced to fit accordingly. Full size digits in a smaller plate look stupid. For a rough guide they sell for a tenner at our local autojumble, prints them off while you wait. Quote
Gerontious Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 8x6 here. Never had an issue with either the police or a jobsworth MOT. Quote
Stu Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 Legal size here It's pointless changing it on my type of bike! There is no gain at all Used to run 8x6 on sports bikes for years with no issues 1 Quote
S-Westerly Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 I'm thinking of changing mine to an 8 × 6 as it would fit. Not sure if aesthetically it'll make much difference. Quote
bud Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 I used to run smaller plates and loud exhausts years ago. It's not worth the hassle now. That and I got old! 2 Quote
Bender Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 A nephew of mine has just had the pleasure of 3 points and a fine for incorrect number plate, I did tell him, he didn't listen now he's got a new plate that's going to prove rather expensive come renewal as he already had 3 points...... 2 Quote
S-Westerly Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 I think if you get pulled over for something else and then get a bit mouthy you will find yourself in more trouble with a non standard plate. 4 Quote

He's a very pleasant kid, the police said he had noticed the plate days prior to pulling him, you would think a get it changed or else would have sufficed, I didn't say I told you so, no sir not me I would never say that..... 1 3 Quote

To my mind that police person missed an opportunity. They should have shown a little empathy and told him to get it changed. Now he's going to resent the police while faith in the force is at all time low. 2 Quote
AstronautNinja Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 I'll be sticking to normal, legal size. Can't be arsed with any conversation with the police over somehting like a plate 3 Quote

He's so laid back he would probably buy them a drink, but yes your right, I've been let off with a word in the ear before. Quote

Joe85 Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 7x5 on every bike for the last 9 years. I did buy a 6x4 once and that was an utter pisstake. I use A1 Showplates. 1 2 Quote

I was pulled a while ago when riding off road, green lanes. I wasn't doing anything wrong it was just part of a spot check clamp down of bikes green laning to make sure they were road legal. The copper picked me up for the small plate and gave me fourteen days to rectify the issue. No fine or points. Maybe I was just lucky, in fairness the copper was actually ok. 2 Quote
RideWithStyles Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 Thats maybe the difference? seen a few times with the same offence…you get booked. only seen once and copper in good mood, you get a warning. 1 Quote
Davidtav Posted August 30, 2024 Posted August 30, 2024 I feel a lot of sympathy for Benders relative. When I was young in the 70s I don’t think the police were as pernickety. For example, the L plate on my Fizzie was literally the L cut from an L plate and stuck on the top part of the rear shock. Bore no resemblance to an L plate. But nobody pulled me. … nowadays everything seems different. And does public opinion of the police no favours. And they seem to have different rules depending on the vehicle. For example I saw a new Ferrari today with no front numberplate. Now if I took the front number plate off my Mini I bet I would get pulled Quote
