  1. Can anyone explain why certain dog owners go to all the trouble of scooping up their dog's shit into a little black bag only to fling it into a bush or up a tree ? Out of sight out of mind perhaps but only until the autumn when the leaves fall from the trees to reveal dozens of these vile packages dangling from every branch . The worst place I've seen for this revolting phenomenon is the northern slopes of the otherwise picturesque Malvern Hills. What is the point , why do they do it ?
  2. Hello and welcome to the forum, could I recommend that you read the notes at the start of this section. You will only get good advice on here if you ask detailed questions and provide pictures .
  3. Normally a headlight bulb has a three pin connector so it can't be be wired wrong . Maybe someone has bodged it with bullet connectors and got them the wrong way round. Who did this ? Get them to sort it out or just swap the wires around until it works . Other than that , without a picture to look at that's all I can suggest.
  4. You know I'm not very good at proverbs in English so I was wondering, that has the same meaning as: "a nail in someone's coffin", hasn't it ? No it hasn't . It means another person that someone has had casual sex with whereas the second one means an act that has metaphorically brought someone or something a step closer to death. Which in certain areas of Coventry probably does mean the same thing after all
  5. Myself, took a corner too fast on my push bike yesterday , lost the back end because I've worn my tyre down to the bone. Corrected the skid , braked then went into another skid . Fast approaching a kerb and not wishing to buckle an expensive wheel I turned away , hit the kerb sideways and launched myself into a shrubbery. Completely unscathed, didn't even get my trousers dirty. Gave a group of commuters a good laugh.
  6. This is the Chinese one I was going to fit but never did. I never got round to figuring out if the wire colours corresponded , I was going to just plug it in and hope for the best. http://i.imgur.com/PmsnjNw.jpg and this is from the factory manual http://i.imgur.com/rCNGllO.png confusing or what? If it helps I can have a look at my ER5 tomorrow provided it's not covered in snow.
  7. What a bloody mess ! They weren't even soldered by the looks of it . Looks like someone has fitted a similar rec/reg of a different bike .

    I broke it!

Doubt it but it is a sound business model! Just sand a bit off one of the fins and you can proudly state "Hand finished in the UK". Come to think of it, for £40 it would be a chuckle to see if it's any good... [/quote Exactly, I bought a hat the other day that said on the label Made in China but brought to life in Birmingham! My knock off Ultrafire torch that I paid £3.75 for is performing brilliantly. Now JML is selling it for £9.99 so up to a point the higher the price the more convincing the quality.

    I broke it!

The nuts weren't anywhere near tight enough - neither was the spark plug. I've ensured it won't happen again by not letting Ollie do it. I tell you what Bob, for £40 it's bound to be good! So if I bought a dozen of these off Ali Baba for £20 a piece and put them on eBay for say £100 each that would make them even better !
  10. All good advice . A mistake I nearly made once was to disassemble a Honda centrifugal filter and completely fail to notice that it was full up with grey sediment. This was so neatly compacted that it looked like part of the so called filter. I think I accidentally poked the cake of muck with a screwdriver which went right in . What a dreadful design, I wonder how many million Hondas have died prematurely because of it ?

Weh hey look at this ! Just don't tell the insurance company. http://i.imgur.com/BmqswLK.png

    I broke it!

Result ! I love CGs . If you suspect that the thread in the rocker arm is shagged I've got a complete rocker and tappet assembly in my spares box . Got a tatty Haynes manual as well.

    I broke it!

It wouldn't run at all with a dropped valve . Might not be that bad . I've still got a box or two of CG engine parts somewhere. PM me when you find out what happened if you want.
  14. I've been back on eBay trying to find another replica ER5 rec/reg for £13 and failed dismally. Either I got that price wrong or that seller doesn't do them any more. Prices seem to vary enormously from about £50 to £100 with everything in-between.that's for new pattern ones , I don't think its worth bothering with second hand to be honest.
  15. Yep that's the one alright . Now that the rec/reg has become more likely to be at fault it's well worth mentioning that your electronic ignition box is very much at risk of being fried . By the way a lot of this knowledge was gathered from my time as a member of the ER5 Owners club forum which has now disappeared. Here you go http://i.imgur.com/ELVIEkb.png this is from another forum .
  16. There shouldn't be any oil in the signal generator window. As for the clutch its going to be covered in oil when you're riding along but nobody's going to see it anyway.
  17. Knock out the exhaust baffle and get some ear plugs, should sound lovely. Welcome to the forum.
  18. About the only thing on eBay is a universal cleaning kit . Purely out of curiosity, what exactly attracted you to this type of bike ? (apart from the fact that they fit in a lift )
  19. I would strongly advise AGAINST using a flap wheel unless you want a " hall of mirrors" effect when you apply the final polish.Nitromors will remove all paint and laquer but it won't remove factory applied powder coating or anodizing. Hand rubbing is the only way to achieve an even finish on large areas .
  20. If the cause of the tacho failure IS rec/reg related then its probable got a burned out diode so you may be able to snip it out and solder in a replacement. BUT this is not yet a certainty so don't jump to conclusions like I did.
  21. Oh lovely, an ER5 question. First off does the rev counter work ? The reason I ask is that blown tacho on ER5s is very often a warning sign that the rec/reg has also failed . The good news is that you can get a Chinese copy rec/reg for about £13 on eBay if you don't mind waiting a few weeks . I've got one that I never fitted because it turned out that I didn't need it . I eventually traced my starting problem to having a handful of filth moving around inside the starter motor. By the way , my rec/reg is mounted under the seat behind the battery instead of down behind the engine where its supposed to be. If you want to have a look at my ER5 project it's on here in Readers Rides as ER5 Winter Project and in Old Bikes and Restorations under Aluminum Restoration. Good luck. Anything else you want to know about ER5s just ask , I'll be happy to try and help.http://i.imgur.com/p0Cijit.jpg
  22. They want fettling .
  23. cheers for the reply , if I get this RS for the right money ( or ideally no money ) I'll probably need some advice . I've already priced up a top end rebuild kit and found some to be surprisingly cheap but I guess you get what you pay for. My main worry is that may have been abandoned by a student who has left the area so I've no idea how you even begin to obtain legal ownership or trace the keeper. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Watch this space.
  24. One thing I don't understand about the Lycra brigade is their inability to realise they are the most vulnerable road user. Yes they may even be entitled to ride three abreast down a country lane but they are putting themselves in harms way and will be just as raspberried or deaded, whether in the right or not Mamils..Middle aged men in Lycra. I see a lot of these pricks when I'm out cycling.
  25. overwhelmed ? No chance of that . I just wondered if there were any known recurring faults specific to this particular motorcycle. Thanks anyway. I wasn't thinking of paying for it anyway, I am hoping to swap it for an exhaust system off an er5. I only do up bikes for profit if there is a massive margin to be made . I've bought CG 125's for as little as £20 and sold them for £500. My best score was a Zephyr bought for £40 and sold for £800.here you go sorry about the image quality,it's a photo of a photo http://i.imgur.com/5JBSrpJ.jpg My next project could be an Aprilia RS125 that I have spotted in a garden overgrown with brambles. I'll begin by offering £20 for it .
