So, got no where else to vent this but argh! Ive had pain in my right knee for a while but was putting off doing anything about it. Had a scan recently and just spoke to the doctor with the results. Long story short, it's buggered and I need some kind of cartilidge operation. Likely to be laid up for about six months.

Crap.

I might even have to move because there's no way I can ride after the operation (no reliable public transport down here) and the damage is sufficiently bad that I can't put the operation off. Anything else that can go wrong? Sigh.

Longer-term, could a scooter or DCT bike help keep you on two wheels?

Not sure TBH, got to talk to the surgeon about what the operation is going to look like and presumably some kind of cast will be needed. I'm in bits actually. The one good thing is that my work comes with a proper gold plated medical cover so I'll be able to get it done privately and therefore hopefully won't need to wait too long to find out about everything. Small comfort though.

Obviously I don't know the specifics and I'm no expert, but it's impressive how much can be regained sometimes with good physio work - saw it first hand with my wife's ACL injury a couple of years ago. Really hope there's potential for that in your case.

I have severe osteoarthritis in both my knees

I have virtually no cartilidge left!

The specialist says I need 2 knee replacements,

My particular NHS won't do it at my age (they only last 15 years).

I can't afford the time off work anyway! they won't do them together!

I'm still managing to ride my cruiser(that's why I had to buy it).

You have my sympathy but it is liveable with.

I hope this post comes across as encouraging for you that's how it's intended

I think you need to get a second opinion or something as I think someone is telling you porkies of some sort

Tracey's dad has had both his knees done 4 times in total

The first time he was about 45! He had one done again as it was right and he has just had it done for the 3rd time as it started moving! He is now 75

So one has lasted 30 years up to now and the other he has just had problems with shrinking bones

I hope this encourages you I had keyhole surgery on a cartilage problem on one knee around 1992 & it's been fine since, occasionally aches in the winter but touch wood ok. Physio was hard afterwards but just had to grin & bear it.

If this is right it is absolutely shocking...

I wouldn't want good knees when I'm in my 70's, I would want good knees when I'm young enough to bloody enjoy them

6 months?? No way, you could have it amputated and a wooden pirate leg fitted in less time!

Could even train the parrot to sit on your shoulder and say pirate stuff in less time..

Hmm, maybe I misunderstood what he meant... when he said six months I thought that was time before it was fully usable but I spoke with a doc friend who has dealt with a lot of serious knee and limb patients and she suggested six months might be including all the rehab and physio and whatnot.

So hopefully all is not lost. Thanks for the encouraging stories folks.

Last time I had it done I was playing again within 6 month

The father in law has just had another knee replacement and they drilled all the way down his bone to just above his ankle and to just over halfway up his thigh!

He was walking again within a few days!!

Its a long slow recovery but he is walking about a lot after only 2 months

they have targets to meet

I am my own worst enemy in 2 ways!

1. I am a lot overweight

2. I still work full time and when I answer the questions I say I can do

things even though they are really difficult or painful.

The last time I saw the specialist he told me that he was surprised I was still working

and to come back when I couldn't anymore

The wife has that in both hips and her back Ian......she's now waiting for the first hip op.

Seems to be more and more people suffering with it now.......and at a much younger age than expected. So WTF has gone on over the years to cause that?

Thankfully we're covered in the Spanish health system......so hopefully it won't go on too long. She got the MRI the following day so things seem to work quicker than the UK.

The hospitals are a damn sight better too! This is Baza Hospital......a state run local hospital, not a major one like Granada.

What I've noticed though is more women seem to be affected than men.
