MarkW Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 Right, I've just been to Duxford with the family and am now having an argument with my wife at the tail end of a very acceptable sauvignon blanc. Which was bigger, the Lancaster or the Halifax? The WiFi in this restaurant isn't fast enough for me to be bothered to persevere with.Hic... Quote
Gerontious Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 By wingspan the Halifax was 70cm wider. and overall length it was 100cm longerit also had an extra 200 horsepower. Quote
MarkW Posted April 15, 2019 Author Posted April 15, 2019 Top man Mr G. Now, what's the difference between hummus and taramasalata? A beige material has arrived at the table that so far defies categorisation. Quote
MarkW Posted April 15, 2019 Author Posted April 15, 2019 so who won the debate Regretably my wife: I thought the Lancaster was bigger. Quote
Tango Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 Hummus is nice....taramasalata is rank........that's all you need to know!..... Quote
Mickly Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 Taramaslata is usually pink and made of fish eggsHummus is beige and made of chickpeas. Quote
skyrider Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 hhmm I think I will go for the fish and chips Quote
Tango Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 Taramaslata is usually pink and made of fish eggsHummus is beige and made of chickpeas. Exactly what I said......hummus is nice.....taramasalata is the work of the devil and should only be fed to cats...... Quote
MarkW Posted April 15, 2019 Author Posted April 15, 2019 hhmm I think I will go for the fish and chips But do you have the chippy put your salt and vinegar on or do you do it yourself when you get them home? Quote
Gerontious Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 Chip shop vinegar is awful... its made from a concentrate they add water to. I always ask for salt then add vinegar at home. (Sarsons) Quote
skyrider Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 when I get home then it is not all soaked in Quote
geofferz Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 when I get home then it is not all soaked in Correct. Quote
Joeman Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 Somewhere amongst my grandad's old stuff I have a genuine service manual for Halifax bombers. Incredibly detailed drawings showing how they are put together and details how to service them along with my grandad's own hand written notes. He was considered an expert on Halifax bombers and spent much of the war moving around the middle East telling people how to keep them flying. Got some fantastic photos of Halifax bombers parked up in sandy middle Eastern air strips too. Quote

MarkW Posted April 15, 2019 Author Posted April 15, 2019 Love a Lancaster... Cool! Where's that? Quote
S-Westerly Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 Halifax was a marginally larger aircraft but could not carry as large a bombload as the Lancaster. Quote
Martyn850 Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 Love a Lancaster... Cool! Where's that? That’s at the Canadian Warbird Heritage Muesum in Ontario. The year after it came and did the tour of the U.K. Quote
Guest Richzx6r Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 I too would have gone Lancaster....my favourite ww2 bomber too Quote
fastbob Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 There's one more Halifax now . http://www.archieraf.co.uk/archie/1048tls_continued.html Quote
MarkW Posted April 16, 2019 Author Posted April 16, 2019 I saw one of the last flights of the Vulcan over Elvington a couple of years ago. What a machine! One of the things that surprised me was how close it got before you could hear it - pretty much right over head, at which point it was deafening. There was something very unsettling about seeing something that big coming towards you with its bomb doors open: if you'd been on the Falkland Islands in the early 1980s you'd have had the distinct impression that nothing good was about to happen. I'm pretty sure I saw THE last flight of the Vulcan at RAF Fairford IAT . It came so low over the road on approach that I felt like the sky had fallen in . I've got some pics somewhere on an old SD card , I'll have a look tonight. Ok found them , apologies for the quality. Edited April 19, 2019 by fastbob Quote
